So I was bored last night and was looking at lists of "Greatest Albums of All Time" when I stumbled on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums. I have seen this list many times before, I think I may have the magazine of when it was published. I decided to embark on a challenge to start with the number 1 album and listen to them all.

I have obviously heard many of these before, own many of them, hold many of them in my personal lists but I thought it would be fun to try this.

Then my second idea came to me. Why can't AP join in? So what I propose is that we listen to two albums a week and then discuss them together and why we think they were picked, or why they shouldn't have been picked. So if you want to join in then post and lets go.

The first two albums that are to be listened to are

1) The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Band
2) The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

Here is the link

WEEK 2:
3) The Beatles - Revolver
4) Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Unless I can listen to the ones I don't have for free there is no chance I can do this, money is tight at the moment.

I am obviously going to do this. I own some of them but I will be downloading many an album for free.

I kinda like this idea. 2 a week is a good idea too, stuff like this should be spread out, not rushed.

Maybe each Sunday you post the next two on the list and then we discuss those. I can listen to Pepper and Pet Sounds this week if more people are into it

There are a billion people over at rym that have done that over the years, rating and reviewing each album as they go along.

I would do that but there is a chance I will like some of the albums and then I will be forced to buy them, I can't appreciate an album to the full anyway via downloading.

These are different. These are personal lists that they created themselves. The idea of this thread is to listen to the RS500 list and talk about the albums

Sgt. Pepper's isn't even one of The Beatles' top 5 records. Boom. But "A Day in the Life" and "She's Leaving Home" are definitely among their best songs.

Pet Sounds is fucking magic though. "God Only Knows" is so good, I just don't understand how anyone could write it.

Also: maybe 10 a week is more manageable. Then it's just a year. You don't have to hear all 10, but pick a few from in that group of 10 to re-listen to, hear for the first time, chat about, etc.

I don't see how the idea is different: Take a publication's "X albums you must hear yadda yadda yadda", listen, rate 'em and/or review 'em.
