Listened to Graceland for the ∞ time today. It was awesome as always. For anybody that likes that album, they should check out Xavier Rudd's latest album, Spirit Bird, I think he blends folk music and world music in a very similar way to Simon.

Also, just because I'm bored, if you had to re-do the top 10, keeping in mind musical and historical importance, but allowing for personal preference, what would it look like?

Mine:
Abbey Road
London Calling
Innervisions
Highway 61 Revisited
Born To Run
What's Going On
Illmatic
Astral Weeks
Bridge Over Troubled Water
A Love Supreme

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy

The only Pearl Jam I'd listened to before this was Ten, which I thought was only 'okay'. I'm not really a fan of grunge to be honest. I think this album is better though, just because it's a bit weirder and more experimental. So there's stuff which I'd consider 'standard' Pearl Jam on here, but then there's some stuff like Aye Davanita, Bugs and Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me that I never thought would be the stuff they'd write. I'm not saying I loved it all, but it was a pretty decent and surprising listen.

1. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
2. The Clash - London Calling
3. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
4. The Beatles - The White Album
5. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
6. U2 - The Joshua Tree
7. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
8. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
9. Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
10. The Replacements - Let It Be

Limited myself to one record per artist or else it would have been mostly Springsteen haha

Blood, Sweat and Tears - Child Is Father to the Man

Figured I'd check this out because I knew absolutely nothing about it. I'd never heard of the band beforehand, which I guess is pretty poor form on my part. It was really cool, sounds very much of its time, but it was a brilliant mixture of rock, pop, classical, jazz and psychadelia. It's all a bit of a mess, but in a good way, without being as terrifying and 'unfriendly' as something like Zappa or Captain Beefheart. It's a great, loud and exuberant pop album.

Like I said before, I know nothing about this band. Does anybody know what album of theirs I should listen to next?

They became less psychadelic and jazzy after that. Their next record was one of the biggest megahits of the 70s. That's supposedly the only one where they really sound like that.

Ah, that's interesting, makes me feel even more embarrassed that I'd never heard of them before ha. I guess I should check it out then, seeing as according to Wikipedia, it went quadruple plantinum. Hopefully it'll be a good listen.

You might recognize some of their hits if you heard them. "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Spinning Wheel", "And When I Die", etc. Also they have a song called "Lucretia MacEvil" that's a lot of fun.

Aye yeah probably, I just youtube'd Spinning Wheel and I do vaguely recognise it. I'll try and find time to check out that album soon then.

The fake tan on the singer is pretty shocking as well...

I'm looking through the list and marking any entries from artists that I've never heard of.

So, on my list are:

Loretta Lynn - All Time Greatest Hits
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
EPMD - Strictly Business
John Prine - John Prine
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
Peter Wolf - Sleepless
The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica
Go-Go's - Beauty and The Beat
Modern Lovers - Modern Lovers
Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks
Linda Ronstadt - The Very Best of Linda Ronstadt
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Labelle - Nightbirds
John Mayall With Eric Clapton - Bluesbreakers (I know Clapton obviously, but never heard of John Mayall)
The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace of Sin
Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?

....So that's a shitload of artists that I'm ashamed to say I don't know the first thing about. Anybody more knowledgeable than me want to pick one from that list for me to listen to first?

Tough call between Car Wheels and Gilded Palace, but I'd say go for the latter. Seminal country-rock record and probably the best album Gram Parsons ever made.
