The Chant - This Is The World We Know
Record Label: Full Metal Records
Release Date: May 14, 2010
The Chant is a self-described progressive gothic metal band hailing from Finland. Their current line-up formed all the way back in 1999, then later releasing demos in 2005 and 2006, one of which won a radio contest and granted them nationwide airplay. They gained attention both from Finland and Shadow World Records, bringing forth their debut 2008 release, Ghostlines. The nonstop success of Ghostlines' single on the radio waves gave The Chant a second and more important opportunity with their second album, This Is The World We Know, because this time they have caught Finland's gaze.
How is it?
It's an interesting, more progressive take on alt metal. The album is littered with melodically interesting keys, a nice distraction from the generic but well-done bass lines which are also more melodically interesting than some of The Chant's American alt metal counterparts; a trait rarely found since Evans Blue's The Pursuit. The album showcases deep, haunting, and melancholy vocals which hold a strong resemblence to System of a Down and 10 Years. What really keeps the band above the cut is the innovative guitar work, interesting tempo changes, varying song structure, and lyrics with depth. All of this brings a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been steeped in homogenization.
