In our last year of high school, this is what we did in English 1. We studied pomo theory mainly so this reminded me of Barthes (I think) and his essay 'the death of an author'. So the whole "birth of a reader must mean the death of an author", where your readings of a text are given the same, if not more significance than the authors because they no longer hold possession. Especially applying like prodirectic code and even p-tourism theory leads to that whole argument about the redundant nature of knowledge and if creation is real.
We were forced to do a year of constructivism, hyperreality, self reflexivity, meta narratives and structuralist theory. Basically at 17 we had far too many post colonial theorists etched into our brains. I'll take it that your English studies are a bit different?
