Canadian Music Round-UpSmallman Retrospective:

I’ve been working on a retrospective for Smallman Records since as you may already know, the label closed its doors last year. If you want the long story about why I'm doing this, head here. But all you need to know is that I’ll be sharing little chunks from my project in this space. Today's excerpt comes from Greg MacPherson:

Anyone who follows Canadian music knows about the prestigious Polaris Music Prize that is handed out every year. And for the first time ever and with their last release ever, Smallman finally got a nomination on the long list for Greg MacPherson’s Mr. Invitation.

“It’s good for Greg because he didn’t used to get much recognition out east,” says Krause.

His first record in five years, Greg MacPherson has always been around Smallman in one way or the other, even if he was signed to G7 ( a now defunct Winnipeg label owned by Propagandhi) up until now. Krause was his booking agent for awhile and Smallman publicist Amelia Curran did some management work for him. He went on the road with Smallman bands like Sixty Stories too.

“Aesthetically I think it’s funny to be on Smallman because I don’t necessarily have the same sound as a lot of their bands. It’s very organic though, Rob is a friend and I trust him a lot. It’s great to work with people I get along with,” said MacPherson.

“It’s just so unfortunate it came when it came,” said Krause. “He went into the studio, started recording and was ready to go by the time all the stuff with Jason happened. I offered him the chance to leave and go with someone else, but he didn’t want to do that.”
