Pitchfork gave this a far better review than the new Foo Fighters. As far as mainstream pop disguised as another genre goes (Foos, rock; Wiz, rap) this cannot touch the new Foo record.
Although the FF record is a pop album, it's good and has enough actual rock to get away with it.
This is too poppy for the kind of rap album it's billed as. And lyrics are so much in rap, so having such poor ones is inexcusable.
All that being said, my basketball team won the championship this year and wear Black and Yellow, so that's become a bit of a theme song. The rest? Don't touch it.
no, seriously, score's way too high. lyrics are a huge part of rap and if the album doesn't have decent lyrics, i cannot in the right mind say that it is a good album, not even 75% worthy, no matter how "slick" it is. the lyrics are pathetic. wiz sold out and gave the people what they wanted: a bunch of shallow songs about weed, bitches, and champagne over smooth, radio-friendly instrumentals.
by the way, you have no idea how much his opener pissed me off. saying “And they say all I rap about is bitches and champagne" then proceeding to make songs that ALL talk strictly about just that, made me lose all respect for him and cannot listen to this record at all. absolutely pathetic compared to the freestyles and mixtapes he put out back in the day.
