Sitting Down With Matt Malpass

Posted by: Matthew Tsai (05/04/11)
In a new interview, Matt Malpass confirms that he is in the mixing process of finishing up his and Leighton Antelman's new record and that it has ten tracks. He also offers some thoughts about the music industry and tools like Kickstarter.
InterviewI had this idea where I would create extremely poppy dance-y tracks, pretty ridiculous to the point where in early form they almost sounded like Lady GaGa or Ne-yo tracks, something along those lines. But then I would completely indie-fy them by throwing on a bunch of organic instruments/keys and then let Leighton have his way with them.

Pumped for All Get Out. Saw them live a real long time ago and they killed it. Haven't really followed them much since, but I'll have to check out the record. Good interview.

"You tend to work in polar opposites in terms of the bands that you produce from Lydia to Cute Is What We Aim For to Decoder. Do you think that sticking to one specific genre would hinder your ability to grow as a producer?"

"Does the way you work on production vary on genre? I know you’ve done Holiday Parade, Lydia, and Decoder, which all have a very distinct sound from each other. How does the band’s sound change your process?"

Hmm...

Plus not much of this information is new. He told me much of that Postal Service-like stuff as well as the solo Leighton record being different.

It is, from the little I've heard. But it's really good. Basically a poppy/synthy Lydia.
