Just because I listened to them due to your love of them, I must say (you probably don't care) dc Talk really did nothing for me. I mean, is a lot of their appeal in the lyricism? I'm not a practicing Christian, and consciously that wasn't the reason I didn't enjoy them, but maybe deeper down, I knew a lot of the lyrics wouldn't apply to me, so I sort of tuned them out subconsciously. What do you believe is their best album, maybe I just listened to the wrong one. |
To be fair, I grew up with them, and a lot of what I love about music today can probably be traced in one way or another to something they did, so that's going to make our perceptions of them different. I do think that they're musically solid enough for a new listener to appreciate them, though. The lyricism was a major factor growing up, but I don't automatically get excited every time a song says "Jesus" anymore, lol, so I wouldn't say that's a big draw now; I could see it inhibiting someone else's appreciation, though.
Jesus Freak is their best work. Give singles
"Between You and Me," "Colored People," and
"Day By Day" a shot and see if they do anything for you. The vocals are what I most appreciate about them today, so listen for that element more than anything else. They worked off of each other really well.
