Who?
Woodson are an Ohio indie quintet influenced by the likes of Brand New, Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine. The band was profiled by yours truly in the Self-Promotion Spotlight and this is their long awaited full-length debut.
How is it?
Tremendous. Save for a few production issues, most probably related to money or budget issues, this is a shining piece of cerebral, concussive and revelatory songwriting.
Of the album's ten tracks, the most shining example is the near-perfect "Bad Man," a pensive and chilly ode to self-defeat that's as riveting as anything currently circling the blogosphere. Followed closely behind is the subdued and understated ballad "Young Love," an acoustic yarn about the hopes and fears of adolescent romance.
When the quintet lays on the guitars, like on the six-minute opener "Heavy Heart," and the fuzzy 'Distorto," they reveal a penchant for guitar-based ruminations that are enveloping and indelible. To be succinct, this music needs to be heard to be realized. There's an atmosphere of disappointment, hope, fear, rage and passion that's far too potent to be ignored. Score another one for the Buckeye State.
