Yesterday MTV turned 30 years old. Where did the music videos go?

Ugh, enough with this "MTV doesn't play music" argument. It's not fiscally feasible anymore to simply air music videos. They're all on demand online now anyways.

This is a time for reminiscing, not bitching.

I agree

Showing videos brings in no revenue. Why would Viacomm not change programming to its current state?

Besides do you really want MTV to show videos? Everyone always made fun of them for being out of touch/lame when they did (even in the 80s). Besides you can now watch ANY video on demand. Whats better than that?

Besides exposing people to new artists, what other benefit would MTV airing videos have?

I'm in Mexico right now and Latin America's MTV actually PLAYS VIDEOS! it's awesome!, sure they do pass Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant but only during the afternoon or from 8 to 11pm, but the rest is videos, concerts, half hour blocks of just one artist, it's pretty awesome. They did a 30 minute block on just Blink 182 the other day and it was followed by a 1 hour recap of the Rock AM Ring. It's just that the US audience loves crap on TV and that's what they get. Oh, and there's still a TRL in the South America and European MTV's.

I remember being younger and getting genuinely frustrated when a video or song I liked wasn't number 1 on TRL.

Every time MTVU is on, there are music videos, and not just Top 40 stuff either. Last time I saw it they had Manchester Orchestra, Mat Kearney, & Taking Back Sunday.

Do any of you really want to sit around all day and watch music videos for artists that you're just going to complain about anyway?
You realize this is 80% of the fun of watching music videos right?

I would never watch MTV if it played current chart topping music videos. That sounds awful. I love MTV now.

This. Truth. All of it. Bravo. Most popular music videos are shitty now anyways.

This was me with VH1's weekend music countdown. I geeked when NFG's "All Downhill from Here" was in the top 5 for the longest time.
