This is a good review, though I don't necessarily agree with your conclusion, which doesn't really matter. I feel like the interludes are totally worthless, and actually hinder the album rather than permit it to flourish.
Aside from "Us Against the World," and "Major Minus," there is not a single bad song.
Excellent review, but this is sort of a silly sentence. It's curious to take a step back and examine why Coldplay has the stigma that they do. I completely agree with you that it is unwarranted.
This album is so, so good. Great review also. I don't mean to harp on the little things, but why was there a comma after every single track name? Some of them didn't even need to be there and it threw off the flow of the sentence.
This is a great review. I find the album to be even better than their last two. I really love the fact that even while their one of the biggest bands in the world, they are still finding ways to reinvent themselves with each release.
I do agree that Major Minus does miss the mark, I dislike Martin's vocals in that song. But it's the only song on the album that I don't enjoy. Us Against the World is likely my favorite song on the record. Especially live it sounds lovely.
Yes Coldplay is just like U2 minus anything that made U2 original. I don't hate Coldplay and I don't think many people hate them, their music is so bland that the only emotion it inspires in many people is indifference.
I love this album, 100x better Viva La Vida. And I also love 40 Year Old Virgin, and laughed my ass off during that scene, but it doesn't change the fact that I think Coldplay is the greatest international band around now.
The Pitchfork review said something like "this album sees Coldplay walking the tension of wanting to be one of the best bands in the world and having to settle for being one of the biggest"
