Currents – Currents EP
Record Label: None
Release Date: November 1, 2011
Channeling beloved acts such as Just Surrender and Matchbook Romance, Currents are bound to turn some heads with their debut self-titled EP. Working with Justin Powell (The Cab) and Kyle Black (Set Your Goals, Pierce The Veil, All Time Low), it’s no wonder why these guys sound musically and vocally mature despite being such a young group.
“Chase The Sun” begins with atmospheric guitars before the dual vocals of Joe Sherman and John Alaimo dominate the track, adding texture with their raw Just Surrender style call-and-return singing. Not unlike Conditions, Currents use their guitar skills to their advantage throughout the EP. Most notably heard on “L is for Lush,” the guitar tones add layering to this painfully honest track. A thick bass line pulsates throughout the raucous, angry “Cause I’m A G” as Sherman and Alaimo croon, “We weren’t designed to love.”
Unfortunately, “What Big Teeth You Have” comes across as an insipid offering – not bad by any means, but a little safe and unexciting. Still, the musicianship shines throughout the track of optimism. In this way, if Currents can continue to experiment and push their sound – not relying on the same formulaic guitar work and vocal style – it’s clear that they could really stand out. These four tracks are full of promise, so here’s to hoping their debut full-length uses experimentation and effort to really make a statement for these guys.
