Tower and The Fool, The - XIII

Reviewed by: Ryan Gardner (10/31/11)
The Tower and The FoolXIII EP
Record Label: Run for Cover Records
Release Date: October 25, 2011

When Therefore I Am broke up, fans everywhere were crushed, especially after their brilliant 2009 release, The Sound of Human Lives. Now two years later, vocalist Alex Correia is back with his new folk-inspired rock group, The Tower and The Fool. Only two tracks, XIII showcases an entirely different side to Correia as he is now backed by a country-tinged guitar twang.

“Die Alone” has a distinct country flare to it, although the style fits Correia’s vocal style in a wonderful unison – surprising, yes, but in an idyllic way. Raw and as honest as ever, Correia’s lyrics will surely appeal to longtime fans of Therefore I Am, while the musical style here will draw in even more fans from differing genres and styles of music. Even more stripped-down and folk-inspired, “NYC” has Chris Rosenquest taking the lead on vocals, reminiscent of Dustin Kensrue’s solo work or even Brian Fallon’s work in The Horrible Crowes. The grating vocal delivery on “NYC” creates a painfully poignant demeanor throughout the track, adding versatility to The Tower and The Fool's sound.

With XIII, The Tower and The Fool is depicted as a dynamic group, leaving listeners anxious to hear what direction they are planning to experiment on the (hopefully) upcoming debut full-length. Until then, however, the ten minutes of these two tracks will have to tide us over.

8/10
