Bigger Than The Sound: "Pinkerton Effect"

Posted by: Jared Kaufman (07/12/07)
I'm sure James Montgomery's latest installment of Bigger Than The Sound will intrigue many of our readers. This week's piece is about the "Pinkerton Effect," a phenomenon that occurs when an album is initially panned by pretty much everyone, yet, a decade later, suddenly becomes revered as a tremendous and important work (like Weezer's 1996 Pinkerton album).

I am proud to admit that I've loved Adore since I purchased it the day it was released; one of my all-time favorite albums and I highly recommend everyone check it out, or give it another shot if you wrote it off some years ago. Glad to see that people are finally coming around and appreciating it for its beauty and what it really is.

Agreed.

And while this James Montgomery guy is usually entertaining to read, this article had me going "Duh" throughout the whole thing. I mean, I feel like this topic has been run into the ground, he didn't really offer anything new (although with the new Smashing Pumpkins coming out, perhaps that's why he decided to go this route) to the discussion.

Wrong. Pinkerton is the sound of a band at their creative and musical peak. When I first heard both albums, I thought Blue was obviously the best. But once I gave it a chance to grow on me, Pinkerton revealed itself as the obvious winner.

I realize there's no 'right' or 'wrong' in this discussion.

"...A Pinkerton Effect album usually follows the "breakthrough" album in most bands' catalogs, oftentimes killing (or seriously wounding) said band's career and leading to the departure of "original members."

Haha, I should've phrased it: Both albums are equally great, in my opinion, and important to who I am today and the music I've discovered, grown to listen to, liked and/or loved, over the years.
