Too bad this didn't happen before lady gaga's last album. Selling a couple hundred thousand copies on amazon for 99 cent each is the only reason she sold over 1 million in a week.

This will have quite a few effects on the industry as a whole. These discounted sales were one of the few reasons people weren't pirating music. Now, more than ever, it's important for a new system to be put into place to help judge a band's popularity (for tours, promotions, etc.). Now, for an album to "count" ... they're telling artists to effectively punish the biggest fans, who buy music the day of, by keeping the price high. I hope the response is to price albums at $3.50.
