Ashton - Rewind
Label: Unsigned
Release Date: June 12, 2007
Have you ever heard a record and it rekindled some of the same feelings you did for another record? Don't you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Isn't it more sentimental if the other band is broken up? That is exactly my feelings of Ashton's debut record called Rewind. I might get a few kicks and scrapes for this one, but fans of Park will rejoice.
The record begins with a muffled guitar sound off an old record, and as soon as it's sound becomes more clear, it becomes more clear of who this bands influence is. The first track(which is also the title track), "Play/Rewind/Repeat", brings automatic memories of various songs off of It Won't Snow Where You're Going and Building A Better __________, with lyrics like "Pick yourself off the floor/ You know where shes been and you've done this before/ so just let it sink deep inside/ Ripping my hair out as feelings collide", brings some of the emotion that those albums did. The record continues with gems such as "Emily" and "Surrender" which also draw some influence from bands like Hot Rod Circuit and The Get Up Kids. Vocalist Kraig Morgan cries out "Swallow this pill, let it sink to that empty hole in your chest/ keep silent and still as the carbon rushes through your veins/it's for the best.", in "Your Last Kiss", another strong track on the record. One thing is for sure, these guys were hurting when writing this record.
The only problem I have with this record is some of the same ones I had for the bands I said influenced them, a lot of the songs sound the same, and you have to be in a certain mood to get into it. But with great production, elegant writing, and appropriate musicianship, Ashton will be a band to watch out for in the future. Rewind is a gem of a debut for a band like Ashton.
