Pretty much these days the only difference is that a mixtape will be available as a free download from the artist (although with the big guys they often get rereleased in pay-form later). Time was mixtapes would largely feature rappers going over other people's beats, guest verses and snippet previews of new material but these days the only real difference between a mixtape and an album is the avenue of release.
