I'm pretty sure I'm vocal about so much stuff that people aren't surprised by what I listen to anymore.

Interesting to hear you're an AFI fan though, Eda. They're probably my favorite band after The Mountain Goats.

I will say I don't understand how SO many people can say some variant of "I like everything....except country! Fuck country! Ew!"
Probably because they equate today's "rock and roll with a twang" country with real country.

Even still, there's something to like in most every genre. Pop-country isn't my biggest go-to, but there's a handful I quite enjoy. But yeah, I imagine that's the case.
It's just ignorance, plain and simple.

Anyone who bases their opinion on a genre solely by what's played on the radio shouldn't be allowed in any sort of musical discussion.

Sooo ... virtually the entire general population.

People base their opinions off what they are exposed to ... their opinions are still valid, they're just framed from a different reference point.
If someone won't make the effort to actually seek out more examples of a genre before instantly writing it off based on one or two songs, they don't deserve to have their opinion heard.

Guess that's where we disagree. We make instant decisions all day, and as Gladwell points out in Blink most of the time when we "spend more time seeking out other examples" it usually leads to just solidify our original decision in the first place. Not always, but most of the time. Even so, they still deserve to voice their personal opinion.
So in the same vein, a racist who has only ever met one asshole deserves to spout bullshit rhetoric about how he's superior to an entire race?
