All Time Low isn't taken seriously because their music turned incredibly commercial. I take The Party Scene ATL seriously. The new music is garbage and lacks any sense of musical merit that would otherwise set themselves apart from artists like Kesha. |
"Lacks any musical merit?"
Making pop music with heart behind it is not equivalent to selling out. Sure, they changed their style. They’re still a hell of a lot better than most of the three-chord pop punk bands regurgitating what’s been done before fifty times. I bet a lot of people have I Feel Like Dancin’ on the tip of their tongues right now. That was a joke song. A joke song meant to climb the charts, a joke song meant to gain them more fans. Why is that not selling out? Because I Feel Like Dancin’ is a complete anomaly when put against the rest of the songs on Dirty Work. They wrote that song to expose the REST of their music to a wider audience, to get mainstream pop fans to give the rest of their music a chance. As for their poppy direction, Alex is a fan of pop music, and they didn’t want to fit in the pop punk niche anymore, which is completely understandable. If you don’t like the new record, or the one before it, I can get why, but if there’s one thing All Time Low is not, it’s soulless. Alex puts so much of himself into his lyrics and I know that better than anyone else because I followed them through the writing process. Catchy pop melodies and 4/4 measures is not selling out. Just because they made an album too mainstream and too poppy for your tastes doesn’t you give the right to discredit all the effort they put into making the music they make.
I’ll be the first to admit, I DON’T like the new album apart from around 3-4 songs. But I respect them for having the guts to break away from the scene they were so deeply engraved in.
