I think there are a number of problems with the assignment, not the least of which is that these are 8th graders with no real use of the skills/knowledge you'd gain from such an assignment. The concept seems more apt for a college course.

I've never even heard of a civics class. Pretty sure we never had to do them at school. I guess what passes for civics may have been lumped in with history, but we never did anything overtly political in history. Well, I suppose a lot of history is political, but we just did the obvious stuf like WW1 or the industrial revolution. We never did anything about how elections are run or how bills are passed.
