09:58 PM on 02/23/12 | I like this a lot, I don't understand the hate. So he's not releasing what you want nor expected, big fucking deal. This is the same reason so many people hate Skrillex, just because he's not singing for FFTL anymore, anything else he does is immediately hated on.
This songs got a nice, sunny vibe, while maintaining the electric feel. And Tilian's vocals are great. There's a teensy bit too much autotune for my tastes, but apart from that I have no complains about this, I enjoy it a lot.
He also mentioned that this record will be a collection of a lot of genres, so don't expect this to be the constant theme throughout. I personally dig it.

I'm sorry but this post is so far from the truth I just couldn't resist the urge to set the record straight.
People hate this song because it is freaking terrible, not because it's not Tides of Man. It's hilariously ironic that you use the Skrillex analogy to make your point as well because Sonny's songwriting is equally bad.
This sounds like Breathe Carolina covered Cascada (whoever mentioned Owl City is insulting Owl City; I might even be insulting Cascada), and I'm almost positive BC doesn't even use as much autotune and vocal modification as this track does. Tilian's naturally appealing voice is tainted beyond recognition by all the heavily distorted backing vocals and that ridiculously superfluous surface layer of autotune on the main vocals. It makes me sick. The man can sing, leave his perfectly acceptable voice alone. It's an insult to his talent.
Not only is the songwriting generic, it's downright banal, and is a perfect example of the stagnant state of top 40 single-driven pop. The conventional wisdom is that you can spend a minimal amount of cash and/or effort on a terrible product and then juice it up with artificial ingredients to make it appealing. Fortunately in this situation we aren't dealing with top 40 where the listeners just take whatever they're spoon-fed. Tilian's previous (and current) engagements have proven that he's on a higher musical level than this tripe, and most people on this site who are into Tilian's scene don't have the mainstream music press and radio's wool of ignorance pulled over their eyes regarding the nature of radio pop and its integrity relative to music in general. There's no one to fool, and assuming the rest of Tilian's album is what we'd expect from him, this song is going to create a big gaping crater in its overall worth. I can tell you right now people are going to buy the album and delete this song.

I like it.
No, it's not what I expected at all, but hey, it is catchy. And based on the studio updates, I think the other songs will have more appeal to fans of Tilian's past work.
But this track is what it is: absurdly catchy pop. He sounds great. I'm willing to bet this is the most sugary track anyway.

07:14 AM on 02/24/12 | Better than anything Saosin will ever do post- AG/Cove... now that I got that out of my system, I enjoyed the shit out of this. Excited as hell for the album. Regardless of the auto-tune, anyone who is a fan of falsetto vocalists and melody should enjoy this song. If he can get his foot in the door in the electronic music scene, I can see him being quite prosperous. Maybe Skrillex or some other big name will take him on a tour? |
No... you didn't just...

I don't believe catchiness should be the lone criteria for what makes a song good, but that's just me.

Of course not. I enjoy his tone, the melody, and the beat, among other things. It's an incredibly straight-forward song, but it works for me.

07:21 AM on 02/24/12 | Bleh, do not like that chorus at all. The rest I'm pretty indifferent on. Wanted to like this, oh well.

10:40 AM on 02/24/12 | bummer, i was expecting more from him. he is wasting his natural talent by using auto-tune.

Agreed 100%.

Yes, people are allowed to not like it for what it is, and I can understand and appreciate that. But I do believe a good portion of hatred for it comes from it not being in the same vein as Tides, and I believe that's highly irrational. Anyways, I appreciate your point of view. While I don't agree, I believe that's the beauty of music, everyone has a different preference and opinion!

10:28 PM on 02/24/12 | let's make a movie or something I don't see why anyone would want this guy fronting Saosin.

Taste in music is relative. It's just a song, this is just music.

11:03 AM on 02/27/12 | Wow. So much overreacting. Also, I don't think the album is even going to be "that" extreme.
I liked this for the most part.
