Who:
A Reno, Nevada 4 piece who aim to evoke equal parts Explosions In The Sky and older Thrice.
How Is It?:
The Looming Black Cloud is a major improvement up for the band. A Moments Loss have finally channeled their influences into something that can be both beautiful and moody. Hard sections schizophrenically blend into sweeping ambient instrumental sections with ease and, more importantly, without sounding forced. The problems that plagued their first release have been (for the most part) fixed and while it is not perfect, The Looming Black Cloud is a step in the right direction. The band is much more captivating during the softer sections. I only wish that they had focused on this dynamic of their sound more because this side is clearly where they stand out. If combined, these melancholic segments could make up one hell of ambient instrumental album. With better production and a little more focus on the direction they want to take with their material, I could see big things from these Vegas boys on future releases.
