He could still score 20+/game late into his career, as long as he takes 25+ shots a game, which I wouldn't put past him.

Yea ok, one of the most competitive dudes ever is going to retire as the 3rd all time leading scorer because he's averaging "only" 17 PPG? I don't care what he says; I thought it was common knowledge that Kobe was killing himself to get the scoring record. Even Simmons knows that.

Pretty sure Simmons is the one pushing that scoring title argument. I don't think Kobe cares all that much about Kareem's record. He wants that 6th (and possibly 7th) ring for obvious reasons. He has publicly said that he wants to walk away from the league before he is pushed away. I think it's a legacy thing. I think he emulates Jordan with the positive stuff, and tries not to follow the same mistakes that Jordan made (retiring multiple times, playing for another team, averaging 19 PPG at the end of your career).
