aaron's choice to sing, rather than shout, will never sit well with some people. i wouldn't be surprised if aaron is a bit louder on this record, if the last minute of Fiji is anything to go off of. this sounds like something that would have bridged the gap between Brother, Sister and it's all crazy!. since those two are my favorite mwY records, i'm really excited.

It's not necessarily his decision to sing that doesn't sit well with me but more the lyrical focus. What this album sounds like remains to be seen.

All I could hear for sure were the words "Fiji Mermaid" haha. I think he said something about asparagus too.

Anyways I enjoyed what I could hear and cant wait for this album. Did anyone else hear a little of the Velvet Underground influence Rick mentioned in his blog?
I'm pretty sure I heard "Don't you come knocking at my door!" in the end.

Lyrically, every album is fantastic and that's what makes this band incredible. I just don't understand how people think the last album isn't good lyrically.

I don't think the lyrics on the last album were necessarily bad, but they definitely don't hit as hard as on the band's earlier stuff. The songs were more relatable when the lyrics dealt more bluntly with Aaron's person life and problems, rather than personifying them in vegetables and farm animals. I respect his decision to do that, but I just don't feel the same connection.

I chose my words carefully - "lyrical focus" is the key. The last album wasn't bad lyrically, I just didn't connect with the focus of the lyrics. Hope that makes sense.

I understand what you mean, but I think that some of the lyrics are more "hard-hitting" than some of their previous songs.

A lot of the last album was based on stories/fables

So it makes sense that the lyrics are less personal.

Yeah.

I wish that was the same for me. The opening track was hard-hitting for me and then the odd line throughout. Goodbye, I! had a few particular moments that struck me. But this was a stark comparison from the previous three full lengths where every line seemed to touch me and there would be layers of hidden meaning that would be revealed suddenly 100 listens in... I miss that.

so far, they've performed 4/5 new songs, if the set-lists are accurate:

guile
sonic blur
fiji mermaid
january 1878 (was written on a different setlist, although someone in the crowd said that the first line went "january 19*78," similar to january 1979, and the mewithoutYou facebook seemed to confirm this)
sea miner

no idea if some of these songs are the same with rotating working titles. but there was a song written on a setlist called "january 1878". you can check their set-lists on twitter.

See, those last two seem like the guys having fun with the setlist. (Though I didn't hear that about the first line of Jan 1878). For example, sea miner is just a funny way to write C-minor.

I think the January 1878 is a genuine new track as January 1979 was on the same setlist. The song is actually titled 'Chris Giles (January 1878) on that setlist. You are correct regarding sea miner. I find it funny that someone didn't realise that!

ha, well i screwed that one up then. but the january one i think is legit, because all over their facebook page are comments from people saying they saw them play "january 1979 pt.2":

http://www.facebook.com/mewithoutyou...50257907695547

i could be wrong, but i'm just throwing evidence out there. i do feel like a dolt for the c-minor thing though haha
