Sadly I only enjoyed their debut. I just couldn't get into their second album.

This, sophomore wasn't bad but I knew from the second I heard the female vocals on the opener that it was going to be an awkward record.

stoked on this. selfish machines was awesome. seems a little quick for a typical recording cycle, though. didn't they just get into the studio? either way, i'm excited.

Wait, what? There's hardly female vocals in the album at all, what's that got to do with the "awkwardness" of it?

Self Machines was enjoyable, with a much stronger songwriting ability, tighter instrumentation, and good Spanish influence that sold me on it.

For a long time heavier bands would tack on female vocal guest spots. Most of the time these spots were very forced sounding and disrupted what could be great songs. Sometimes they work great (The vocals on FATA's "the fiction we live" , Electric Forest by I see stars) but they often seem so awkward to me. Besides that (though the points you said I agree with) SM had a few other missteps that added up to an album that was very good but unmemorable (ie; that autotune/vocoder song).
