This is such a generic story. "Hey guys my band broke up so I moved to L.A to go solo, it's scary here on my own but I think I'm going to make it. YEAH!!"
According to the members of Hey Monday, apparently they can.
Well they lied. The label probably had the rights to Cassadee even if the band broke up. The label would have had to decline options or the contract was completed. Most likely the label didn't want to work with them anymore.

Idk, I'm excited to hear her new solo stuff. What she played on her acoustic tour sounded great, and Hey Monday had a lot of promise. She could put out some great pop music.
Most likely, yes. I worked at a label. My girlfriend works at a label. I have friends signed to majors & indies. A band can't just quit. Well, they can, but they don't get to go on as they please. There would most likely be a key member clause that entitled the label to first shot at new bands. A band can't just quit a label & sign to another.

They can't. It doesn't work that way. Maybe their contract expired and it didn't get renewed ... but, yeah, bands can't just quit labels. Otherwise many, many more would.
