So, I'm new to the real world. Just out of college. I know that dating is supposed to be massively different now, so I wanted to start a thread specifically for dating in the twenty-something world.

In general I just wanted some advice: what's a good first date? I don't know this girl at all, so I need a safe bet.

edit: but go to a cool restaurant to pick up something to eat. and then just kinda see where the night takes you. those are always the best nights. at least that's been my experience.

Go for your standard dinner and a movie, if its already hot down there and I'm betting it is, take her on a picnic, girls love picnics, and food.

For a first date. Keep it short. Keep it somewhere quiet, where you can talk. Coffee or a quick meal with a nice surrounding area. Try to find an interesting place that you enjoy being at, but not something too over the top. If it doesn't go well you or her can split early and not waste anyone's time. If it goes well, maybe spend some time walking around the surrounding area and get dessert/a drink somewhere. Be low key on a first date. Too much thought or desperation is unattractive. I wouldn't recommend taking her to a bar, but depends on the type of girl she is. Girls gonna size you up right away and know if she wants to go out with you again fairly quickly. Good luck and be confident.

Movie's kind of awkward with someone you just met because the lack of talking. I think anyway. Picnic is a great idea.

This. Try to avoid movies on a first date. The first date is the "interview", so do something where a lot of conversation can happen organically. Go to a fun museum or something where there are a lot of sights that you can talk about if an awkward pause occurs or you draw a blank.

Dinner is the safest bet I can think of :) you'll talk to her and see if you want to turn the 1st date into a second date and vice versa plus if the dates a dud then u eat at a restaurant anyway, win win

I once went to a record store and then to a local show for a first date. It actually worked out really well. Find out what shes kinda interested in and try to aim it towards that. Good luck man.

I think dinner & drinks or coffee and then going on a walk outside is a really ideal first date. Somewhere that gives you an opportunity to talk a lot. I also like if we do something we've casually talked about...like if we talk about a band and I say I haven't listened to them much but i'd like to and then when he picks me up he has it on in the car. subtle touches will give you big points.

For real. This is a music site. Take her to a show! You two can talk between bands, or hang out at the bar during bands you don't care about watching. Honestly, I'd treat a show as an "interview" kind of date - meet her at the venue, there's less pressure to carry on lengthy conversations (read: silences will be less awkward in such a setting), you can see if there's actually some chemistry or shared interests. If the show goes really well, keep it going with some late night dining or ask her out on an "official" date before parting ways.

OP, I was just wondering the same thing. I'm going to take a girl I hardly know out on a date for the first time in my life. (I've always gotten girlfriends through mutual groups of friends, work (bad idea), etc.)

Do people kiss on the first date? I am so unbelievably clueless it's hilarious.

I've went on dates with guys and not kissed them because I felt nothing and couldn't wait for the date to be over so they got an awkward hug. I can't think of a first date where I was into the guy and would be opposed to a kiss. You'll be able to tell if you should go in for the goodnight kiss or not, don't worry!

But then again idk what I am talking about because I think I've kissed most people already before we go on a first date, oopsies. But I think that comes along with meeting through mutual friends.
