ESV or the NASB(New American Standard Bible) are probably your best bets for most literal(meaning word for word), updated versions right now. NIV is more a phrase for phrase translation, but is still decent.

Ugh, but NASB is just annoying to read -- it doesn't flow well at all. At least ESV has pretty stylization in the poetry (then again, I studied with the stylist, so perhaps I'm biased).

By any chance do you live in opposite world?

Meant "not athesit here". Many atheist are intelligent and can have good conversations about what they believe and make ignorant comments

I don't think I'll be stepping on anyone's feet when I say this thread isn't meant to be a debate thread, but a discussion about the Bible, specifically in relation to the study of it. There's already a thread (and probably multiple) in this forum where you can take the arguing about theology, or the lack thereof.

Not trying to be that guy, but it's going down a ridiculous rabbit trail and it's just silly.

Yeah, I agree. I used the NASB for a long time, and switched over to ESV a couple months ago.

The part after the -- is completely true according to my experience, but I have trouble with the first bit. It's not about joining a fucking team. You're either religious or you're not. Sometimes atheists are more in-your-face than Jehovah's witnesses.

That's a great quote. Backed.

That is fine. Its a typical atheist arguement. Do you have support that jesus did not exist and was not the son of God and died on the cross?

Its called Faith. having faith in a conspiracy theory that can be proven wrong is not Faith. It is ignorance

Evidence is either important or it's not. You value it or you don't. You can't say evidence is important for the purpose of debunking a belief, then say it's not necessary for the purpose of justifying a belief.

Isn't the best part of not believing in God not having to deal with religious stuff? I don't get what you're trying to do, but whatevs, have fun with it.

I am not saying that god does not exist I am asking you to provide evidence that he does not

To the people who have studied the bible previously: did you have any favorite books/sections?

It's obviously not falsifiable, so there really is no need to ask this question. It isn't enhancing any argument that you're attempting to make.

I love the Gospel of John: especially Chapter 6. All of the '...is not the bread we eat the body of Christ..." bits have been useful, along with the writings of Justin Martyr when looking at early Church ritual and Eucharist/Communion theology.

Also, the Book of Samuel rules. Just sayin'.

Ecclesiastes is probably my favorite. A really thought provoking book about the meaningless of death and good and evil.
Mark is my favorite gospel. It comes off as the most honest, in my opinion.
Job is a really great read on suffering with a brutal, honest, even if unsatisfying answer.
Genesis has some good stuff, I love Cain and Abel and the tower of Babel.
Not a huge fan of Judges, but I love the Samson story.

What are some of yours?

Mine is actually revelations. I can't stand the "love everybody" jesus that the bible portrays. I love the dark jesus that revelation portrays. And from a lit persepctive, I love all of the metaphors that revelation contains
