My point is that if you're offended by "A WOMAN REFUSES TO HAVE SEX WITH ME. BETTER MAKE A JOKE ABOUT KILLING/RAPING HER LOLOLOL" type jokes, then you should be offended with Louis too rather than be defending him. Louis' joke and the friend-zone/rape-zone joke aren't really dissimilar. Being opposed to one and not the other is kind of inconsistent.

I don't see how he can be such a huge fan of comedy as he's saying and not laugh at or enjoy racist, sexist, violent or otherwise 'offensive' comedic tropes. I can understand being offended by it, but it really cuts you off from a lot of great material.

The friendzone clearly does exist in the sense that, y'now, it does happen, but when people mull over it as an excuse there are definitely shades of self-entitlement and even sexism there, as if women aren't ultimately just people and as such will be attracted to some and not others. If it really is a case of them being a shitty, shallow person just try to come to terms with that and move on as quickly as possible.

I don't know any person ever who's felt compelled to sob in a cold shower after hearing a rape joke. Also, for what it's worth, I actually happen to know a rape victim who can laugh at rape jokes. Her name is Kelly and she's gotten over it.

Jokes about rape ≠ actual rape, and doing the former is not an advocacy for the latter.

That's good for Kelly. I always love to hear stories about people who are able to overcome the mental anguish of their assault. :)

Most victims aren't quite as lucky, unfortunately. Now, I know a joke about rape isn't actually the same thing as rape, but based on many (maybe 100+ by now) conversations I've had with victims, they can be emotionally triggered pretty easily. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for them to live in a society that would take the most traumatic event of their life and turn it into a punchline.

There's millions of people who have been robbed or mugged before, and would probably classify that as the most traumatic experience of their life, yet I doubt you feel the same way when a punchline is based on being that. I get what you're trying to say, I just think we have differing viewpoints.

That's because:

1. Muggings/robbery don't have the same pervasive history of post-traumatic stress disorder that sexual assault does.
2. Society is not embroiled in a debate over whether or not muggings/robbery is funny, because victims of mugging/robbery aren't saying en masse that jokes about muggings/robbery harm them.

I find the muggings/robbery comparison (an argument I encounter a lot) to be indicative toward the societal attitude toward victims of sexual assault. I mean, are we really going to compare getting your wallet stolen to being raped? :\
