Fan Reports In: Kevin Lyman

One of our astute readers listened to Kevin Lyman (creator of Warped Tour and Taste of Chaos) speak at Ferris State University earlier tonight and provided this detailed description of the highlights, including record industry thoughts, Warped '08, and a Warped '07 DVD. Read the full account below.
Fan ReportKevin Lyman [Warped Tour creator for those who don't know] just spoke @ Ferris State University for about 2 hours. I went and have some news involving Warped tour, etc.

Kevin spoke to about 150 people tonight at my school where I and most the others attending were/are Music Industry Management Majors. He opened with a story of his life. How he started in clubs, what he did in college, and how Warped started. He then did Q&A for about 90min. I can't remember everything, but here's what I did gather.

1. Kevin does not believe 360 deals are the way of the future. He did mention they work for people like Paramore because they had success, but he did not think they were a new staple in the industry.

2. There WILL be ONE MORE WARPED DVD that will most likely be sold solely @ Warped 08 and obvioudly be a reflection of performances from 07. It will sell for $10. He said they jsut didn't see a big point in continuing them much longer and they weren't moving a whole lot at retail stores for $14.99. they will still do the comps, but only one more dvd.

3. Kevin has 2 other projects in the works for Next year IN ADDITION to Taste of Chaos. One called "Mayhem" which will be a more hardcore oriented traveling festival or concert of some type [he talked about As I La Dying and how they had the best selling metal album but were contractually on Warped Tour and he thought bands like that needed a different outlet. The 2nd will be college based and called "Get A Life". He gave no further details about this one however.

4. When asked why no announcements had been made about Warped 08 confirmations he stated that he would announce 12-14 bands NEXT WEEK. He did however mention that he was going to confirm a few from different genres to hopefully get less angry feedback initially. He did however confirm AGAINST ME!, The Bronx, The Devil Wears Prada, and Pierce The Veil. He also mentioned G.B.H. had shown some interest. He also said he had been trying to get the Bosstones to come back out. One other fact he stated was that Warped tour will have a lot of young bands on the entire tour and the big name bands will be spread out a bit more giving more young bands a chance to really rise, like Paramore. HE said they'd announce bands almost weekly and have it set before tickets for TOC go on sale.

5. He said Warcon was basically dead in the water at this point.

6. TOC will be going to South America and South Africa next year.

Afterwards, I spoke with him face to face, great guy. HE gave me his email address and I stumbled over my words.
