My favorite local band, The Last of Our Kind, signed toMediaskare Records a few months back, and were scheduled to release their debut album, A Diamond In The Rough, on May 22nd. May 22nd came and went, and the album did not get released, and no one who preordered it got a cd's or merch. Mediaskare has been mum on why the album would not be released, and as of yesterday (July 2nd), The Last of Our Kind decided to break up.

My question is why would the label pay money to send the band to Chango Studios to record the album, and then just have it disappear off the face of the earth without any explanations? Wouldn’t it make sense to release the album, and at least make some money off the band now that they have called it quits? And to top it off, they had a music video all done and shot to be released for the album. They paid for the video and they won’t release it. Makes no sense to me.

It's shitty, but they probably just didn't think the album would sell after hearing the finished product. The distribution costs could have been more than what they figured they would make off of it, so they left it in limbo. Labels suck like that.

Ok so let me ask this, like three months ago, the band posted a unreleased song from the album on their purevolume for an hour, then took it off. Fortunatily i got to hear it, but do you think the label was upset with that?

Most likely. They probably didn't have the label's permission, so it got taken down. I'm pretty sure something similar happened to Fiona Apple, but I could be wrong about that.

Could the band get in trouble if the album were to be leaked? I assume they would but just asking considering they are no longer a band

Either the label wasn't confident with the finished product, or they shelved the album in order to promote another band that they projected would sell better (typically only larger major labels do this though, and with Mediaskare being an independent, I don't see this as a possibility).

Exactly. This is what happened with Wilco's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' album. Reprise Records paid for the whole thing to be recorded, & the band made a pretty experimental album with it. The label thought it wasn't radio-friendly enough & refused to put it out. Thankfully, though, another label eventually decided to release it, & the album did really well.

It sucks, but you have to look at (most) labels as being profit-oriented. Capitalism at its finest, in a sense. There are undoubtedly plenty of music fans who work for the big music labels; but at the end of the day, this goes by the wayside & the profit motive takes precedence over everything else.

Albums cost money to make, and a lot of money to be legitimately released too. They probably cut their losses and just shelved it. You'd think nowadays they'd just release online only at like no expense, but whatever.

Yes, they could get in big trouble depending on their contract. Young bands need to really look over contracts before signing them or there could be big repercussions.

From what I remember hearing of this band their sound definitely didn't fit with the Mediaskare sound so this is understandable.

If the label was worried about distribution costs, then they should've just used CDbaby.

Mediaskare does this ALL THE TIME. I waited for months & months for Exotic Animal Petting Zoo's LP while it kept getting pushed back over and over

It leaked and I jumped all over it. Screw Mediaskare
