Nathan Lint

Written by: Nathan Lint (11/30/07)
Rats! They got to put my list up before I had even finished it so i'm going to have to write quick, shitty little summaries for everything! For the 5 of you whom care, here's my top 30:

30. An Angle - The Truth Is That You Are Alive (Drive-Thru)
29. Small Leaks Sink Ships - Until the World is Happy; Wake Up You Sleepyhead Sun (No Sleep)
28. One Small Step For Landmines - One Small Step For Landmines (Civil Defense League)
27. The Color Fred - Bend To Break (Equal Vision)
26. Melee - Devils And Angels (Warner Bros)
25. Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me (Epitaph)
24. The Snake The Cross The Crown - Cotton Teeth (Equal Vision)
23. Four Year Strong - Rise Or Die Trying (I-Surrender)
22. The Starting Line - Direction (Virgin)
21. Ride Your Bike - Bad News From The Bar (Deep Elm)
20. The Wonder Years - Get Stoked On It! (No Sleep)
19. Paramore - Riot! (Fueled By Ramen/Atlantic)
18. Ted Leo And The Pharmacists - Living With The Living (Touch & Go)
17. Dustin Kensrue - Please Come Home (Equal Vision)
16. Lifetime - Lifetime (Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance)
15. Saves The Day - Under The Boards (Vagrant)
14. Anberlin - Cities (Tooth & Nail/Universal Republic)
13. Sage Francis - Human The Death Dance (Epitaph)
12. The Gay Blades - Ghosts (Independent)
11. Lovedrug - Everything Starts Where It Ends (The Militia Group)
10. Kiss Kiss - Reality Vs. The Optimist (Eyeball)
09. The Swellers - My Everest (Search And Rescue)
08. Eisley - Combinations (Warner Bros)
07. Cassino - Sounds Of Salvation (Independent)
06. Dashboard Confessional - Shade Of Poison Trees (Vagrant)
05. Bright Eyes - Cassadaga (Saddle Creek)
04. Bayside - The Walking Wounded (Victory)
03. The Gaslight Anthem - Sink Or Swim (XOXO)
02. Dear And The Headlights - Small Steps Heavy Hooves (Equal Vision)
01. Weakerthans - Reunion Tour (Epitaph/Anti-)

Why Is Your List So Shitty? This year, I kind of grew out of my musical shell. You may notice that unlike my list from last year, many of the records I have on my list this year weren't really AP.net hyped bands, and if they were, they weren't very well recieved by the concencus. Most of the records at the top were growers. Weakerthans, Dear And The Headlights, Gaslight Anthem. mmmmmmmm. Another album that i'm so glad I liked was The Swellers new record. These guys have been a staple to the local music scene for a while, but this record was the one that really hit home with me. I gotta give a shoutout to my boy, James (ahem Clark Westfield) of The Gay Blades for getting me into his band. Lifetime released their first record in 10 years (which was awesome, see them live), Paramore was ACTUALLY good, and everything Equal Vision released this year was awesome (despite one record).

Highest Honorable Mentions
31. Coconut Records - Nighttiming (Young Baby)
32. Broadway Calls - Broadway Calls (State Of Mind)
33. The Graduate - Anhedonia (Icon MES)
34. Daggermouth - Turf Wars (State Of Mind)
35. Down To Nothing - The Most (Revelation)

Your Opinion Is Way Better Than Mine.Jason Schwartzman is the MAN! Phantom Planet was/is the shit, and so is Coconut Records. Broadway Calls didn't draw a lot of attention, but their record just hit home for me. The Graduate just missed it (great live band, too), I didn't get to listen to the Daggermouth record too much this year, but I liked it enough to give it a spot on this list. Down To Nothings full length is in my opinion the best (real) hardcore record this year. Although, Ruiner was pretty sick too.

Honorable Mentions
Georgie James - Places (Saddle Creek)
Rooney - Calling The World (Geffen)
Attica! Attica! - Dead Skin/ Dried Blood (Red Leader)
Maritime - Heresy And The Hotel Choir (Flameshovel)
MxPx - Secret Weapon (Tooth & Nail)
This Is A Standoff - Be Excited (Independent)
Circa Survive - On Letting Go (Equal Vision)
Jena Berlin - Quo Vadimus (Jump Start)
The Ergs - Upstairs/Downstairs (Dirtnap)
Chase Pagan - Oh Musica! (The Militia Group)
Down To Earth Approach - Come Back To You (Vagrant)
Kid Down - And The Noble Art Of Irony (Burning Heart)
Straylight Run - The Needles The Space (Universal Republic)
Monument - Decades (XOXO)
Cain And Abel - Up North (Sunday League)

Who Are These People?I love manufactured pop music, Rooney is the shit. Attica! Attica! (ex-Marathon) was a fun record but I found myself not into it as much as I wanted to be. MxPx's new one is good, On Letting Go is no Juturna, but it was a decent release and thus made its way on here. The Ergs' new one could've been way better, it is no Jerseys Best Prancers (next time), Kid Down is great for the kids who love Jet Lag Gemini and old Say Anything. Cain And Abel was awesome too.

Album I Liked Despite It Not Being Noted Above
Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High (Island/Fueled By Ramen)

zomg There went his credibilityHey! fuck you, man. This record was good. They changed their sound up and possibly just lengthened their careers by 5-10 years because they're not doing the same shit over again. I will always have a place in my heart for this band (midwest represent).

Albums I Didn't "Get" Yet
Portugal. The Man - Church Mouth (Fearless)
Crime In Stereo - Is Dead (Bridge 9)
Say Anything - In Defense Of The Genre (J)
Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light (Interscope)
Matt Pond PA - Last Light (Altitude)

Fearless released that?!Waiter: You Vultures!! managed to make my top 10 last year, but this one just didn't do it for me. I was hoping it would grow on me, but it just never did. I want to love it, though. CIS just didn't do it for me. It wasn't urgent enough for me, but I'm hoping I can get into it someday. I wanted to like In Defense Of The Genre, but man, if I wanted to hear 2 hours of grunting, i'd go see a grind band.

Top EP's of the year
01. The Reign Of Kindo - The Reign Of Kindo EP (One Eleven)
02. This Time Next Year - A Place For You (Escapist)
03. As Tall As Lions - Into The Flood (Triple Crown)
03. Last Of The Believers - Paper Ships Under A Burning Bridge (Independent)
04. The Maine - The Way We Talk (Fearless)
05. The Crosstown Rivalry - History Is Just His Story (Independent)
06. The Appreciation Post - Brighter Sides (Independent)
07. Steven Fiore And The Good People - The Makeshift EP (Independent)
08. Barely Blind - The Way We Operate (TDR)
09. Paper Rival - Paper Rival (Photo Finish)
10. Reunion - Reunion (Flight Plan)
11. Halos - Halos (Independent)
12. Bedford Drive - The In-Between (Independent)
13. Whetherman - Bull (Adorable)
14. Frank White - Frank White (Independent)
15. Morning For The Masses - Seconds (Emerald Moon)

The Best Bands Of The Future? Please. You don't know shit about musicTROK is going to be popular, such a great record to play for any occasion. This Time Next Year's EP is literally the best summer record i've heard since like...Sticks and Stones? TOYPAJ? So fucking good. ATAL will be back in 08 (this EP was a nice suprise though), The Maine is going to be huge (whether you like it or not, The Appreciation Post is a good band, just need to get that extra push. You should give Barely Blind all your money because they're poor and always on the road. Reunion could've been better, but I'm still excited for whatever they do in the future.

Most Disappointing Albums of 2007
The Rocket Summer - Do You Feel? (Island)
Relient K - Five Scores And Seven Years Ago (Capitol)
The Academy Is... - Santi (Fueled By Ramen)
Say Anything - In Defense Of The Genre (J)
Envy On The Coast - Lucy Gray (Photo Finish)

YawnI love pop, but Do You Feel? didn't do it for me like Hello, Good Friend did. Relient K went out of their way to make a bad record, it seems. Mmhmm was so good. I saw TAI coming after that first song went up, but let me just be the 13434th person to say WHAT THE FUCK?! Like I said above, Say Anything just didn't do it for me, I can't take all the Bemis grunts. EOTC was such a downer for me. Their EP was soooooo good, but they couldn't live up to the hype with this one. Better luck next time.

Albums I Missed In 2006
01. Fireworks - We Are Everywhere EP (Run For Cover)
02. Cold War Kids - Robbers And Cowards (Downtown)
03. The Draft - In A Million Pieces (Epitaph)
04. Polar Bear Club - The Redder, The Better EP (Triple Attack)
05. The Wonder Years/Bangarang - Split (Independent)
06. Skybox - Arco Iris (Independent)
07. Solidarity - Changes Are What Bring Us Home (Independent)
08. Death Is Not Glamorous - Death Is Not Glamorous EP (Dead & Gone)
09. The Ergs - Jersey's Best Prancers (Don Giovanni)
10. Lorien - The Prologue EP (Independent)

So you bring up old albums that suck too? These records all(well most) have credibility, so you can't say that. I am a fanboy when it comes to Fireworks. They're great guys, great musicians, and have a great future. I completely dropped the ball on CWK and The Draft. PBC was awesome, but the new disc is going to bring them to the next level (their fans are gonna hate it).

Albums From 2006 I'm Still Obsessed With
As Tall As Lions - As Tall As Lions (Triple Crown)
Park - Building A Better ___________ (Lobster)
Pistolita - Oliver Under The Moon (Montelban Hotel)
The Format - Dog Problems (The Vanity Label/Nettwerk)
Rory - We're Up To No Good, We're Up To No Good (One Eleven)
The Early November - The Mother, The Mechanic, and The Path (Drive-Thru)
Forgive Durden - Wonderland (Fueled By Ramen)
Set Your Goals - Mutiny (Eulogy)
Brand New - The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (Interscope)
Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel As School Children (Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance)

Those Suck TooThese records are still awesome after a time of a year (or two) has passed. It's too bad that a good amount of these bands are no longer with us (well in band form). ATAL has a great future, The Format is my most anticipated of next year because of this, Forgive Durden will release another underrated record, Brand New will release another (good) overrated records, and side projects from the broken up bands will rule.

Albums Your Parents Will Love
Dustin Kensrue - Please Come Home
Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
Ride Your Bike - Bad News From The Bar
Reign Of Kindo - S/T
An Angle - The Truth Is That You Are Alive

My Parents Are DeadI have sort of a "folk" theme with this one. Nuff said.

Up And Comers To Watch in 2008
1. Dear And The Headlights
2. The Gaslight Anthem
3. Fireworks
4. Paper Rival
5. The Reign Of Kindo

Whats with those aviators, man?DATH has greatness written all over them. What a terrific band. Ditto for Gaslight.

Best New Band In 2007
1. Dear And The Headlights
2. The Gay Blades
3. The Gaslight Anthem
4. Small Leaks Sink Ships
5. Paper Rival

Hey Dummy, most of them were around beforeI know DATH had the demos, Paper Rival was Keating, and TGA was around also, but they didn't release anything, so they made the list.

Best Music Video Of 2007
1. The Swellers - Bottles
2. Kiss Kiss - Machines
3. The Color Fred - If I Surrender
4. Ted Leo - Bomb.Repeat.Bomb
5. Anberlin - Godspeed

People Still Do Music Videos? The Bottles music video alone is why you should love that band. Even if you hate The Color Fred (which you shouldnt), you should love this music video.

Best Lyrics Of 2007
Conor Oberst
Sage Francis
Ian Metzger (Dear And The Headlights)
Nick Torres (Cassino)
Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem)

FanboyyyyI am a huge Conor Oberst fanboy. Always have been, always will. Sage Francis is a great rapper, and his lyrics make you think. Nick Torres will always have a place in my heart with Northstar. Cassino might never be as good as the star, but he's still a damn good writer.

Best Vocals Of 2007
Sherri Dupree/Stacy Dupree
Stephen Christian
Patrick Stump
Chris Cron (Melee)
Hayley Williams

Girls Are On This List?!I know, right? Who listens to bands with chick singers these days? I do. The Duprees just did some great things on their new record. Christian has one of the most powerful voices seen in frontmen today. Chris Cron is just a great performer annnnd great singer. Insert Hayley joke here.

Best Unsigned Band
Fireworks
This Time Next Year
The Appreciation Post
The Gay Blades
Man Without Wax

Unsigned ShittinessThese 5 bands have a shot at getting huge, they're all talented as hell.

Best Live Show
The Ataris
Bayside
Melee
Fireworks
Brand New

You're Wrong AgainThe Ataris show really took me really off guard. I was skeptical especially after Kris Roe took like 10 minutes to get all the acoustics figured out. Of the 5 times I saw Bayside this year, my favorite was an acoustic set they did at Detroit Warped Tour (Anthony was sick, but he still did the show). Fireworks is just a fun live band. For the haters: See them in Detroit and see if you still have the same opinion about them not having a ton of energy.

Hardest Working Band Of 2007
Anberlin
The Swellers
Bayside
Saves The Day
As Tall As Lions

I can't think of anymore witty headlinesAnberlin went to India and still managed to do full time touring. Everyone else loses.

Best Record Label
Equal Vision Records (Best Release: Dear And The Headlights - Small Steps Heavy Hooves)
No Sleep Records (Best Release: The Wonder Years - Get Stoked On It!)
XOXO Records (Best Release: The Gaslight Anthem - Sink Or Swim)
Eyeball Records (Best Release: Kiss Kiss - Reality Vs. The Optimist)
The Militia Group (Best Release: Lovedrug - Everything Starts Where It Ends)

Top 10 Reasons Equal Vision Ruled This Year
1. Dear And The Headlights
2. Dustin Kensrue
3. The Snake The Cross The Crown
4. Greg Sieme
5. The Color Fred
6. Circa Survive
7. Modern Life Is War
8. Damiera
9. Hot Cross
10. The Fall Of Troy

Honorable Mention: Francesca Caldara (just met her, better luck next year, sister)

Most Overrated Band
Cartel
The Academy Is...
Mayday Parade
All Time Low
Angels And Airwaves

BleahhhNothing To See Here

Most Underrated Bands
Dear And The Headlights
Bayside
The Gaslight Anthem
Kiss Kiss
Lovedrug

Beating A Dead HorseMoving on...

Worst Breakups
01. The Early November
02. Rory
03. Pistolita
04. Much The Same
05. Park
06. Allister
07. Hidden In Plain View
08. Down To Earth Approach
09. Piebald
10. The Explosion

Those really did suckI will miss these bands with all my heart. It's official, my days of buying records from Drive Thru records are generally officially over.

Best (Catchiest) Single
Tegan And Sara - Back In Your Head
Paramore - Misery Business
Bayside - Duality
Anberlin - Godspeed
Straylight Run - Soon We'll Be Living In The Future

Musician Of The Year
Stephen Christian
Hayley Williams
Anthony Ranieri
Jason Schwartzman
Cove Reber

YeahGood frontman...India....yeah

Worst Band Of The Year
Chiodos

Band Of The Year
Bayside
Hawthorne Heights
Anberlin
Dear And The Headlights
Fall Out Boy

dfsdfI've always wanted Bayside to get huge. It's never really happened, but they have like a ton of kids at all their shows. HH had an awful year, but the way they've coped with it gives them the runner up spot on Band Of The Year. Even if you hate this band, the members are the nicest dudes.

Most Anticipated Releases Of 2008
30. Gym Class Heroes
29. Cursive
28. New Found Glory

02. Jack's Mannequin
01. The Format

Anticipatedly OverratedMost of these, I have reasons to be anticipating them. If you haven't heard of any of these bands, I suggest you go and check them out right NOW!

Predictions For 2008
Pop Punk Hardcore Will Be All The Rage (but not in a good way).
News Publications will "wage war" with "emo".
More people will say how overrated every band is.
Nickelback and Hinder will come back with less than stellar new records that we all know will go 8x Platinum.
Craig Owens will stop being such a overpretentious jackass (psych!).

Best Songs Of The Year
The Swellers - The Way Back Home
Dear And The Headlights - Midwestern Dirt
Dashboard Confessional - Thick As Thieves
Weakerthans - Relative Surplus Value
The Gaslight Anthem - I'da Called You Woody, Joe
Bright Eyes - Four Winds
Saves The Day - Under The Boards
This Time Next Year - Rules Of A Ghost Hunt

Finally...
Everybody, please stay safe this upcoming year. I want to be able to show you this list at next years end. Even if it's been 1 year, 2 years, 5, 10, or 20. Keep those who have passed away in your thoughts in the future. It's so awful when someone you know passes away and you don't have the opportunity to say goodbye...

You Can't Do That
Check out the band that I'm currently managing here

If something above didn't make any sense, it's because I wrote this in the middle of the night and didn't really pay attention to what I was writing.

This kind of puzzled me, because I was under the impression that these bands weren't really that well-liked here. Good list, though.

he used to be alot cooler in the chiodos bros. days, but i think the rock star bug bit him a little bit. he's still a decent guy, imo.

I should've put "Became BFFs with Nathan Lint" as the Best Moments of 2007 on my list.

But I do miss you so.

This is the list that I've agreed the most with so far. Man Without Wax is a great band and I really think Bayside had a great year, but I cannot wait for solo stuff from Anthony. Only thing I disagreed with was The Ataris for best live show. I caught them earlier this year and it was a good show, but not my top ten.

yes, but in the general concensus of the world, they're all pretty well liked.

I never got to put that in a place, but I think It would make top 5.

Thanks to both of you!

Great list, glad to see Gaslight Anthem and Weakerthans get such high ranks!

More people need to know about these bands, or at least acknowledge them.

he used to be alot cooler in the chiodos bros. days, but i think the rock star bug bit him a little bit. he's still a decent guy, imo.

Hes been a dick to everyone i've ever met. He was still sort of an asshole in the chiodos bros days too.

I miss you too, sorry i've been AWOL lately.

The Ataris deserve this spot because they decided to play 2 songs off their new record and then like 15 songs off Blue Skies Broken Hearts, End Is Forever and So Long Astoria.

Great band.
