Well I've been dreading this day for a while now. I got a 160GB iPod classic back in 2006 and it hasn't failed me since. I remember thinking a few years ago "I'm probably approaching the point where I've found all the good music that exists." Heh. Little did I know that 2011 and 2012 would be awesome and I'd have a love/hate relationship with AP.net for showing me hundreds of obscure bands.

So yeah - what DO I do now? I'm rather OCD about my music library, and I like to keep it on me at all times. As far as I know there is not a bigger size iPod (and for the record, I do enjoy having an iPod. I think it's simple, convenient, and I like the connectivity options.) Is there another good mp3 player that has larger space? Gah.

I don't think so, I think you're going to just have to delete some stuff.... I bet you've got MB's worth of material on there you haven't listened to in years.

If you haven't done this already, you can have iTunes downsample everything to 128K AAC. If you've currently got your files stored at a higher bitrate, you can save a lot of space at the expense of some quality. You may not be able to hear a difference, but that's up to your own ears. Be warned. The first time you do it, it will take a loooong time.

I guarantee there is music you do not listen to on that.

My 45GB will take 22 days to get through, your 160 would take over a month. You can probably live without some stuff.

This, and I bet you wouldn't revisit those tracks soon anyway. If you're the digital pack rat you seem to be, buy another iPod and move some of your catalogue onto it. Perhaps you could make your new one a genre- or band-specific iPod, with just hip-hop, or the Beatles and their solo careers.

The internet once told me that the Archos 7 can hold 95,000 songs, but I'm not sure if it was inaccurate. I did some looking into it and I couldn't find anything to confirm it, but if you know someone with one you could check with them. Otherwise, it's time to uncheck some tracks. You should try a revolving songs thing, where you leave certain tracks on your iPod an make an effort to listen to them and then replace them with the others, it'll probably give you more interest in the stuff on there. From personal experience, it's impossible to have fully listened to all of those tracks and it'll give you time to re-acquaint yourself.

I had an issue with my 30gb Ipod... luckily that one broke so I could shamelessly purchase a new 160gb one. But when I was in your situation I unchecked certain albums in my itunes that I rarely listen too, then selected sync only checked songs. This way you can reduce the amount of music you have without deleting it for good. Also if you are a droid user google Music is amazing, it automatically uploads all the music I download and streams it to my phone, so without taking up space I have more music on my phone than on my ipod, this way you still keep everything with you at all times!

I used to be OCD about having all my music on me at all times, but then I realized that that was stupid and now I only have new music, albums I listen to time to time, and my favorites on my 32GB iPhone. It's about 16GB-18GB of space.

If you can't find anything to delete then maybe getting a new iPod with cloud storage would work

Yeah, the real problem for me is I have a ridiculously varied taste in music, so I can go from listening to post-hardcore to Hans Zimmer to Pink Floyd to Classical in the same hour. And I get a little irked if I don't have access to what I want to listen to when I'm scrolling through the player. Obviously this is a really first world problem, but hey I'm on a message board. What else is new?

The idea of buying a smaller ipod that's genre specific is a pretty good idea, thanks. I could keep things after a certain year on my old too, like post 2000.

open the category that says "last played" and delete anything that hasn't been played(that you know you dont want) or start deleting stuff from there and go up.

Same problem here - I just uncheck songs now. I was hoping Apple would come out with a 200GB one but I think they've forgotten about the classics

If you don't want to delete stuff, you could fiddle with the bitrate so the songs take up less memory on your iPod. You could turn everything you have at 320 to 256 or lower if you're not a big audiophile. You'd free up space without having to delete any songs.
