I really don't care. I will say though that I wish pedophiles and rapists got worse or at least equal sentences to those who are murderers. Also, I don't think someone should get less of a sentence for "Attempted" murder than if they had actually been successful. They get rewarded just because they fucked up their plan of following through with killing?

The reason why rape is not a capital punishment crime is because it will only encourage the rapist to kill the victim after the act in order to avoid possible identification.

The 3 drug cocktail has actually been criticized for being painful especially if not correctly dosed. Even the newer 1 drug injection can take a long time to kill the person. And you can't just changed "peacefully" to "painfully" because we have to follow "no cruel and unusual punishment" clause.

But none of this matters because see JC's post.

All the more reason why I'm against it then.

From what who says? Those in the know are unavailable for comment.

It either is and it's not a proper punishment or it isn't and see the above quote. Either way, shouldn't be done.

The death penalty is explicitly racist and classist. That is the grounds on which I oppose the practice. Moralistic arguments don't seem to have much weight, nor do the appeals to a "harsher punishment by spending life in prison".

it makes me disgusted to see every single comments section, message board flooded with people wanting to see James Holmes die. this is why we're not even CLOSE as a society to start to really change things when it comes to the death penalty

Same here. I was just discussing this on another board and one person said "a couple of bullets, rope, or an axe can do just as good of job and cost the tax payers less"

Well, if the argument is that humane societies don't murder their criminals and then we say, well, death is too easy, then it seems contradictory to me to say that we must imprison them for life because that is worse than death. In other words, if it is worse than death, it is not a matter of being humane or up-to-date, but a better form revenge.

I meant the part where you said it was classist and racist.

Also for discussion purposes, I am against it for mentioned reasons above.

it's terrible....and it's all because as human beings, we still have a hard time curbing our instincts for rationality. Yes, our instinctive response to a person like the Aurora Shooter is, we want revenge..he hurt others and me in a way..so he deserves to feel the same pain. I don't think this is the way we should think.

I'm sure Love as Arson will do a better job explaining, but there are some statistics about the racist bit:

Quote:
Several years after the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, a University of Iowa law professor, David C. Baldus (who died last month), along with two colleagues, published a study examining more than 2,000 homicides that took place in Georgia beginning in 1972. They found that black defendants were 1.7 times more likely to receive the death penalty than white defendants and that murderers of white victims were 4.3 times more likely to be sentenced to death than those who killed blacks.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/09/opinion/09dow.html

I can't find any statistics for the classist bit, but I find it easy to believe that poor people are more likely to end up on death row than rich people.

The death penalty undermines our moral standing, is unnecessary to maintaining order in a civilized society, and presumes our justice system is infallible.

As we used to say...

I very strongly oppose capital punishment. If the government can sentence you to death then where does their power actually end? Who are we as humans to judge if others deserve to die?

Agreed!
