I know a few people who live their and I know how it is. I read all the tips/advices and replies and I'm gonna see what I'm going to do. Maybe go for a long vacation or something (My financial status is stable right now so I can afford something like that) to find out if I still like it there. I know a vacation is something else than actually living there but It could definitely help with making a decision. Thanks everyone for your advice and help and when I really know what I want I will definitely post it here! I will also check out if England isnt an option. Never thought about it that way so thanks!

That's a good idea! My husband wants to move to San Francisco but I'm not sold so we're gonna take a few long vacations there to see how we really feel. Makes sense! Make friends before you move so you can do things and not just follow a tour map haha.

You don't even know him...

Edit: Out of curiosity, where in America did you get/have to stay in your visit? Also I don't know what Keeping Up With The Jones' is so I guess we don't have it either.
Europeans don't tend to mesh well with Americans. I don't need to personally know him in order to warn him of the fact. being confrontational is an American trait that most of the world doesn't find enjoyable.

Another thing I think that irked me about you so matter of factly telling OP he just won't like it is that as an American or a European you're either open to new cultures and lifestyles or you completely have nothing but negative to say about it. You sound like my husband, but OP could be more like me. I would live anywhere the modernized world and be able to adapt. I meet Europeans all the time and often times they aren't as negative as you about the States.

Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to living in a new culture and you can't just tell people they'll hate something just because you don't have anything nice to say.

And I only asked because I disagree with the stereotypes you had to say, like an Indian man can't wear his turban comfortably or we hate you if you don't conform, lol. The point is, I'm not going to even argue it because you're just one of those people. You hate Americans and America, and that's it. But at least word your advice like its not a fucking fact.

Well this is a very bias/prejudiced view.. What do you mean by confrontational? Did some mean ol' Americans shit on your European heritage? I've never seen anyone say or do anything mean to someone just because of the country they're from, but idk what kind of people you hung out with..

I dunno if the political environment in the US is ideal for immigration. But if you do, i'd suggest Austin or Nashville. Those are the biggest music hubs in the world.

I'm not saying anything that isn't known. America is a melting pot. Conformity is a must. Having an outside culture is frowned upon. I'm not making this up, so I don't understand why you're angry at me. I have nice things to say about the US, but what I find nice about it you'll probably take it as an insult even more.

We pride ourselves on being a melting pot, you can find a different country every ten miles, it's fantastic. I don't even know how that's a bad thing, you make it sound like you're the one that's all anti-culture.

This though: Conformity is a must. Having an outside culture is frowned upon. is ridiculous. No, I'm not angry, because it's just so laughable. I'm Iranian, people are interested in my culture and people are always so open to trying new foods, learning about my culture, etc. You should see the eyes that light up when you say you're from a culture that isn't the common for where you live.

Let's be clear now, I agree that in the racist, ignorant, God-fearing rural specific areas of the Midwest or the South I totally agree with you. 100%. Those are some of the most ignorant places in the world, but no one's advising anyone to live there.

"Having an outside culture is frowned upon"
What the hell? From where I live all the way to LA and throughout, the majority of people aren't even white. Your comments are again, just laughable. It doesn't make sense.

Edit: "America is a melting pot. Conformity is a must."
^Are you aware of the meaning of melting pot? It means we have a ridiculous amount of cultures and heritages together, meaning that there is no such thing as a conformity, because a melting pot means everyone is different. That whole statement contradicts itself.

I have a bone to pick with here. Rural areas of the South and Midwest are more culturally conformist (though less than many assume), but the metropolitan areas are just as accepting as any other part of the country. Atlanta's got cultural festivals for a number of different cultures that bring in lots of interested people for instance. And when I was in high school in nearly-rural North Carolina we had a number of Hindu students who were treated with more understanding than a native born atheist (though I can't say I was treated badly really).

I grew up with plenty of creationists and a few racists, but even then most people didn't fall in that category. Ultimately this is really a rural/urban divide with the more rural you are the more insular and pro-conformity you get anywhere in the world, while the more urban the more accepting of difference you find. The South and Midwest would thus tend to be less culturally sensitive mainly because they tend to be more rural overall.

Of course, I'm aware of that. I think I was just trying to understand what HarryPotter could have been referring to when he said that "Different cultures are frowned upon" and "You must conform." and the only place I could think we're the rural, ignorant parts that are in the south or Midwest, mostly. Obviously not the metropolitans, sorry for making it sound like I was stupid enough to imply everything in Georgia is close-minded. Just speaking quickly and generally and trying to understand where he'd get such cockamamie ideas.

I understand, but the opinion that the whole South and Midwest are a bunch of redneck country bumpkins is common enough that I think it's a good idea in general to make sure the real extent of that is accurately stated.
