I'm in a band called Brigands and we have a new/our second album out this week and I was going to price it at $5 on BandCamp but our original album I was thinking of switching over to the "pay what you want" setting.

This made me think to create this thread here. SO, how much do you normally pay for individual songs, and how much do you normally pay for albums under the pay what you want deal?

Does it depend on the band/how much you like them or are familiar with them? Please discuss.

If a band I already like releases an album on a 'pay what you want' deal, I'll generally pay about a fiver.

If a band I hadn't heard of releases an album on a 'pay what you want' deal, I generally won't pay and download it for free. If I like it, it means I may buy their next album.

It definitely depends on the band, if it's someone I already know I'll go $5-10.

$5-10 for a band I know already - I had no problem shelling out $5 for the Louis CK standup a while back. If it's a band that I don't know much about I'll pay $0 but if I wind up liking it, I will either go pay something for the music, or support the band by buying merch, going to their shows, purchasing their next album, etc.

I pay $5-10 for a band I know. If I don't really know the band I just download it for free, but like everyone is saying, if it's good then the band still gets my support.

$5 is a reasonable amount if I wind up liking the album after previewing it.

$0-$3 for a band I don't know.
$5-$10 for a band I know.
$15-$20 for a pay-what-you-want ticket for a show.

I generally don't pay for digital music unless it's a digital only release. Also with Bandcamp, I usually download it even if I haven't listened to it yet so I get the scrobbles and then I decide if I want to keep it or not

I usually can't pay for these kinds of releases, so usually nothing. But, hypothetically, $1 for a song, $5 for an EP, and $10 for an album. This could only go up if the EP/album is long or if the band is in a tough spot.

Yeah I'd rather pay $12 for a CD than $10 for digital.

$0 almost every time (if it's for charity like that Vs The Earthquake benefit compilation, I will actually pay).

However, if I do like the album, rather than just paying more for a digital download, I will buy a physical copy.
