Agreed! He should at least have the actual album released later so ppl can hear the songs the way he envisioned them. Than this idea wouldn't be so dumb... Why is it dumb? No one is forcing you to listen to any of these songs. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for anyone to complain about this (other than the fact that you just want to complain, because Internet).

Because he doesn't want to release a traditional album? Maybe he's interested in democratizing the music and feels like the ideas and melodies in the songs would be better suited to be uniquely understood by each listener. Maybe he doesn't want to own the sole, definitive interpretation of his songs.

Or maybe he's a famous artist and he can do what he wants.

I'm pretty much complaining about not getting a new Beck record when he wrote one. But you're right, its just the internet talking. I hope all my favorite artists just pass their songs off without recording them, it'd be great to never hear any new music from them again.

It's a cool gimmick, but an actual recorded version would be nice. Otherwise I think it's kinda dumb.

You are getting one. It's no less legitimate because it's not in a format that appeals to you.

I don't understand where you get off feeling so entitled as to think that he owes you recorded versions of these songs. He did his job and wrote the music, and its his work to distribute however he chooses.

Besides, why limit the scope of what can be done with these songs? Not only are you going to get dozens of totally unique versions of each one (none of which can be called definitive, making them all equally valid interpretations), but it also frees him up if he ever wants to play them live. He can do a completely different arrangements every night of a tour if he wants to. There's nothing to dictate "how" they should sound.

Sorry he's not pandering to gain your message board approval. Get over it?

So we are getting new music from Beck performed by Beck that gives us his vision of what he meant the songs to sound like? Cause that'd be great.

But yeah, he did his job. Hopefully all the TV and Movie studios just start releasing scripts so we can make our own finished products for everything.

But shouldn't message board assholes be freaking out over this 'unique' and 'innovative' distribution format that isn't really a format for music that 'isn't a totally dumb waste of time'??

This his vision of what the songs should be. His vision is that it's up to the reader. It's not that difficult. Have you ever read a book? It's the same thing.

I don't know what you're on about, but when was it thrust up on you to determine what was a waste of time for someone else? And quit using that tired slippery slope argument to insinuate that no one will ever make or distribute something again. As if Beck, of all people, is going to usher in this new artistic movement.

I completely disagree. Maybe this is the way he wanted it to be released. He's got a ton of albums under his belt, is more focused on producing other people's work, and has dumptrucks of money. Maybe he just wanted to see what people will do with these songs.

I can't see these being a bunch of half-assed Youtube covers, because it takes intelligence and know-how to read music. Honestly, this weeds out the "Guitar guys" that would place this along with their Jack Johnson covers. I'm really excited to see what comes of this.

Its cool to give out sheet music, something a little different, but without the music it seems like a waste. Even if there's some great covers there's gonna be nothing to compare them to, and I'm pretty sure Beck would do these songs better than anyone else, he wrote them and shit. But whatever, people are gonna forget about it, probably undersell by a ton and few covers will be gain any attention.

This is really interesting as a concept... However the execution of the songs will depend on Youtube People makig covers of them?
