So Kim Dotcom (formally the site of owner of Megaupload) is supposedly releasing a new service that... well, just check out the quote.

Quote:
UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings.

We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free. Yes that’s right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works. You can expect several Megabox announcements next year including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models.

Have any of you guys heard of this? It almost sounds too good to be true, but if it is, maybe this is what will become the future of music.

Oh, and here's the link:

So it's essentially a bandcamp website, which wasn't the "future" of music either.

Paying artists for music downloaded for free definitely is the future. Sounds like they'll just be giving the money they receive from ad revenue back to the artists who deliver the most traffic, which is a smart way to go. Get a couple big names on this and make the process easy to make solid amounts of money and you've got a huge service for releasing independent music. I'd definitely use it, hope it comes out soon.

I feel like this is a good direction to be heading in, but I have my doubts here. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Except bandcamp doesn't pay you for free music. If that part of the service turns out to be effective, no doubt you would have up and comers and even higher up artists flocking there.

Nah, you'll have a lot of up and comers, but they won't get nearly as far as they believe they will. Most people who are downloading their music already have their sources, the only people that will flock to this site to start downloading from it will be people who are passionate about that particular artist.

It's going to be the Google + syndrome.

Valid point. I don't know, I can see this working but it's riding on a BIG if.

Gimmesound does the same thing already. This could be successful if the model is kept the same but on a much larger scale. Doubt this will be big enough to blow open the system.
