2008 Predictions--Your Thoughts

Posted by: Anton Djamoos (01/02/08)
The users of this site have a reputation. Earlier tonight, I was told by different industry professionals that this site has a "rough crowd", that the general perception is that the users are vocal and often critical, but have a deep, vast knowledge of the music they love.

It's time to put your penchant for speaking your mind to the test and see if the general perception is true, as we would like you all to give predictions of what you think will happen in 2008 in the music world.

What bands do you think will hit the mainstream in the way Paramore did in 2007? Are there any bands that you think will fade into obscurity? What surprises do you think 2008 has in store for the music world? What other predictions do you have? Be sure to back up your prediction with reasoning.

Your predictions in this thread will be remembered as we will revisit this question during the final week of 2008 to see who was right with what. Call it now and make all of the predictions you can. We will find out how vast the AP members' knowledge truly is.

Next BIG Thing:
The Lives of Famous Men (at least they should be)
(the real next big thing) Farewell and Four Year Strong

Disappointments:
Panic! (but also most anticipated)

Exceed Expectations:
Jack's Mannequin

Fade Out:
The whole dance pop rock thing going on. It's old.

I'd like bands like Drop Dead Gorgeous and Heavy Heavy Low Low to fade into obscurity. basically all shitty metalcore bands as well. ha

I can see this being a good year for Lydia and Four Year Strong.
and from the looks of things, I'm assuming that Mayday Parade will continue to get bigger.

that's all I've got for now.

I really hope the Gaslight Anthem and the Swellers pick up momentum, both bands work really hard and are extremely talented.

I think Green Day's new album will flop, even with their new, much younger fans, because they're running out of fuel.

I think Fall Out Boy's bubble of fame will also pop, because Pete Wentz can't keep them in the spotlight forever.

And while I hope that a band like the Silversun Pickups will get their big break in '08, I sadly don't see it happening, and instead predict that most of the pop-punkers with solid followings will skyrocket in popularity, like Red Jumpsuit, and Cute Is What We Aim For.

I wish more industry pros would listen to half of the things we say. We know what's up. Record execs do not.

Predictions:

Death Cab will put out a fucking amazing album that will see both critical acclaim and commercial success.

I think Jack's Mannequin has the chance to be something huge as well. Andrew will be healthy enough to tour, he's gotten a good amount of press, and I expect his album to be stunning.

I think Straylight Run has one more shot at making a great album, and if that doesn't work out for whatever reason, that will be the end of them, sadly.

Forever The Sickest Kids has a lot of potential. It's gonna come down to marketing and promotion.

Red Jumpsuit will disappear. Hopefully. Or at least use one of the album titles we suggested.

Taking Back Sunday makes an album that is better than TAYF. Jesus replaces Fred.

Mainstream: Mute Math, The Mars Volta, Jack's Mannequin, Anberlin

Breakout Bands: Valencia, Inept, Senses Fail (in the sense that more people will give them the time of day), Forever the Sickest Kids

Fading: Goldfinger

That's all I could think of at the moment.
