Grizzly Bear Not Living Like Rock Stars

Posted by: Jonathan Bautts (10/01/12)
New York Magazine has written an extensive piece about Grizzly Bear and how being a hit indie rock band does not translate into making lots of money.
From the ArticlePeople probably have an inflated idea of what we make. Bands appear so much bigger than they really are now, because no one’s buying records. But they’ll go to giant shows... Obviously we’re surviving. Some of us have health insurance, some of us don’t, we basically all live in the same places, no one’s renting private jets. Come to your own conclusions.

Read this from a Stereogum post. It's a great piece.

But grossing 68k doesn't mean the band gets to keep it.

no shit. you mean you don't get to keep a gross? well if you want to get in to it - subtract 24k total for manager, agent, lawyer, and business manager. maybe another 5 to 10k for travel, crew, gear, etc. you still have a good amount of money to divide up for one night's work. also add in merch. sweet sweet merch. many bands survive on $500 a night and merch sales. i don't need to hear about these guys not balling on private jets. they are in a bus - they beat out 99.9% of bands out there.

That's exactly the point. They're doing better than 99.9% of bands and would be considered maybe upper middle class. And it's very difficult to maintain their income long-term.

You'd be surprised but some younger bands don't even get merch sales because they may go to the venue/promoter. A bus is comfy but when it comes to just scraping by, it's not all 2 Chainz.

Just because they grossed that money doesn't mean shit. They have a label, a manager and a booking agent all getting a fair cut.

A lot of bands are able to successfully tour on a $100-200 guarantee a night, let alone merch sales. Merch is almost all profit if you pay it all off before tour. Shirts are incredibly cheap, as in, getting a shirt printed by whoever for $4-5 and selling them for $10-12 and in larger band's cases, $20. Then there's records, which in most cases, are given to the bands to sell on tour.
