Have We Really Lost 41% of Our Musicians?

Posted by: Jason Tate (10/08/12)
Ars Technica fact checks the RIAA claim that we lost 41% of musicians.
From the BlogBut the second part of RIAA's response is spot on. Both the RIAA and I could be right. More likely: we could both be wrong. It would be irresponsible for me to conclude that, based on my earlier mentioned OES figures and personal calculations, the US has seen a decline in musicians and singers of "only" 8.4 percent. Equally dubious is the assertion that the drop came to 41 percent, "according to BLS data"Śnot to mention the corollary assertion that the fall, whatever the percentage, can be clearly linked to illegal downloads.

Probably pretty spot on. It's getting harder and harder to make a career out of recording and playing music.

Just because it's harder to make a career out of it doesn't mean 41% is just tossing in the towel.

Good. That 41% sucked anyway.

On the other hand though, how does this balance out though that in the Indie/Warped/Punk scene alone (however you want to categorize it) there's been an explosion of the number of full-time touring bands/kids identifying themselves as musicians since 1999? Weird.

An industry operating on a model created in the early half of the 20th Century that has barely adapted to modern technology and consumer demands is struggling in a lackluster economy? How interesting...
