Dikembe’s Gainesville Guide for Shoebies
Here’s a guide to some of the stuff that I love about our city that doesn’t necessarily get hyped up by your average Fester. You might need to take a bike or a bus or a car, but this stuff is worth it if you ask me.
Florida Band That You NEED to See: Little League
Not only do these guys absolutely shred, but they are also incredibly easy on the eyes. Would you like to watch a cute boy play Jazz June-esque riffs that skip along and over all of the shortcomings and insecurities that you constantly dwell on, and straight into your cold, dead heart? Do you enjoy hunks belting out songs about communication (or lack thereof) while chugging totally sick bass lines that will force their way into your dome? How about seeing the flat out hottest babe incessantly laying down a primal pounding on the skins? Well then go check out Little League at The Atlantic on Saturday at 3:30. If they don’t live up to this description, then make sure to let them know.
Cheap-ish Place That You NEED to Eat At: La Tienda
Amazing Mexican food that you can find a little bit North of The Paramount hotel. If you want incredibly spicy, then they’ve got incredibly spicy. If you just want a simple, great steak and chorizo taco, then they’ve got that. If you want a grilled veggie, rice, and bean burrito, then they have still got you covered. If you want ground beef then you can go fuck yourself.
Restaurant That You NEED to Eat At If You Are Suffering From the Everyone Has BO But Me Blues: Blue Gill
A little bit on the pricier side, you can find Blue Gill near the intersection of Archer and 13th. It’s good food with Southern flair and great cocktails. Stop by and get totally shitty with the delectable Sazerac. No punk vests allowed.
Surefire Gator Sighting Location: La Chua Trail
Take a drive out to the La Chua Trail in east Gainesville. If there aren’t any alligators blocking the trail, and you actually manage to make it to the end, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the prairie where you will most likely be able to glimpse some wild horses. Take a stroll out here on Monday morning to try and recoop some of the brain cells you shit out over the weekend when your tummy got upset from too much warm PBR.
Best Semi Annual Sale for Nerds: Friends of the Library Book Sale
All of you shoebies are lucky enough to be in town during the very awesome Friends of the Library book sale. Just north of The Top on Main St. you will be able to find a gigantic warehouse full of books, records, posters, and more books that is only opened up twice a year. There are tons of used books that you should want to read from a quarter to a dollar in cost, as well as newer, more lightly used books for under $5. The records are usually nothing to write home about, though I do know someone that found test presses of both Floor LPs for $1 each. Unless you are complete philistine, you should check it out at least once.
