I was really stupid and went random for my dorm roommate this year and I am pretty disappointed with the result. My roommate is the complete opposite of me but that's besides the point. The issue I have is that he smells SOOOO bad all the time. He's a big dude (a little less than 250 lbs guesstimate) and I can understand that he sweats a lot more than me, but he doesn't do anything about it! He has the worst hygiene out of anyone I've had extended interactions with. He showers 2-3 times a week and NEVER brushes his teeth. The latter I actually called him out on, and he responded by saying, "Oh, I forgot to bring a toothbrush." He refuses to buy one as well and I've offered one of my extras. I wouldn't really care about any of this if I didn't have to live in the same room as him. Our room smells ungodly nearly all the time because he's always in here except when he has class or is eating; he doesn't even leave the room on the weekends either. Another reason why the smell lingers is because he never washes his bed sheets either. I don't like having friends, especially girls in my room because it smells so terrible, so I'm never really in my own room anymore except when I'm sleeping.

So I've tried Febreeze both the fabric stuff and the air effects to try to get rid of the smell when he's not in the room, but it only works temporarily. Should I invest in one of the plug in ones or one of the constant air fresheners? I just don't know if that will just mask the smell though, and I don't know how my roommate would take it if he saw I had an air freshener. Should I approach him about and try to be respectful about it? I never really talk to him even when we're in the room. Also it's not a cultural thing, he's a white dude from Indiana, but he lives on a farm, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Any advice (funny or serious) on this situation would be more than appreciated.

I went random on my roommates, got three guys who ended up being my best friends all through college. Sucks you got a band one but college is all about rooming with randoms.

I've been there! Lol everyone gets terrible roommates, it's part of learning to recognize your own bad habits and how they affect other people. But that is not the issue here. If I were you I would talk to my RA and tell them that you don't want to hurt his feelings, but it's not working out as roommates. Sometimes the RA will have an idea on what can be done to immediately remedy the situation - other times not so much, and you may have to wait until the end of the term to get a new roommie.

Furthermore, I would look for someone you know has good hygiene and habits you can stand to live with. Line them up and let your dorm know that you want to work with them, but that your roommate is affecting your grades and you have to be moved. (Once grades get pulled into it, the college is almost required to get you a new one.) Tell them that you can't study because the smell makes you nauseous or something, it doesn't matter the excuse, just find one and then tell them it's affecting your grades.

As an immediate fix I would go get a few car air fresheners - there are some that are more "manly" scented like black ice. They're pretty cheap and they work well.

Talk to your RA if it's really that bad. You shouldn't have to deal with that and RAs are there to help settle conflicts between roommates (among other things). Maybe they can talk to him and let him know that it's not ok and is affecting you.

I had an extremely stinky random roommate freshmen year. It's a difficult subject to confront, even if you are good friends with them (I still am).. Open windows if you can, candles can help too. OZIUM is a great smell eradicator, rather than a cover-up.

Maybe it's because you're a Packer's fan though.. Douche.
