Quote:
In terms of the original LP's sequencing, Springsteen eventually adopted a "four corners" approach, as the songs beginning each side ("Thunder Road", "Born to Run") were uplifting odes to escape, while the songs ending each side ("Backstreets", "Jungleland") were sad epics of loss, betrayal, and defeat.

So which corner is your favorite and why? Try to think of the two songs as a single unit, and have fun with it.

Damn, this is tricky. Thunder Road, Backstreets, BTR and Jungleland are all perfect, so for me it basically becomes a choice of which of the 'other' songs I prefer. I went for Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, but I had to think about it for a while.

Gotta use some cross country style scoring for this!

1. Thunder Road
2. Jungleland
3. Born to Run
4. Backstreets
5. Meeting Across the River
6. She's the One
7. Tenth Avenue
8. Night

So, therefore:

First corner: 8 points
Second corner: 11 points
Third corner: 9 points
Fourth corner: 7 points

This make sense, because, as much as I love everything on this record (all five-star songs for me), I do believe that "Meeting Across the River" and "Jungleland" work best as a unit. The way the former flows into the latter is remarkable, especially live.

Yeah, Craig got it. "Thunder Road" is my favorite song on the record (and probably my favorite song of all-time), but the closing one-two punch is my favorite combination on it, both for the superb flow and the fact that "Meeting" is - in my opinion - the next best thing after the four corners.

I went for the last two because all four hits being equal, "Meeting Across The River" is the most underrated song on this record.

I've never understood the general opinion that "Meeting" is the album's weakest track.

I go back and forth between "Tenth Avenue" and "She's the One" as to which I prefer. But like I said, I think this record is legitimately perfect, so nothing against the songs I ranked lower.

Me either. It's always been my favorite outside of the four big ones. I go back and forth on whether "Night" or "She's the One" is my least favorite. But on a record this good, I guess it doesn't really matter. Haha.

Taking it in pairs, "Born" and "She's the One" was an easy choice for me. The 4 corners are just about equal, and "She's the One" is the best of the remaining bunch.

What a great fucking poll--awesome idea Matt. I really struggled with this one, but in the end I cannot vote against "Thunder Road." I do absolutely adore the "Meeting" & "Jungleland" combo though. But I like the first two songs too much to vote any other way haha.

^ I think that's actually my least favorite combination. "Backstreets" is the least amazing of the four corners (though it's still pretty amazing), and most days "Night" would be my pick for the weakest cut on the record. Which is totally relative, but still.

I'd probably go:

1. "Meeting" and "Jungleland"
2. "Thunder Road" and "Tenth Avenue"
3. "Born to Run" and "She's the One"
4. "Night" and "Backstreets"
