My brother and I have been fans since the 90's; we love every album, except for this one. In fact, every single person I know in real life, does not like this record. Clean out your ears; this isn't good.
K I'll refer to you and your brother now for all things music.
Maybe it'll grow on me later on in life, but after trying to like it over and over again, the album fails to do anything for me. There comes a time in everyone's life, when one of the favorite bands releases an album they can't get into; for me, that is this one.
GREAT review. Agree about feelings when i was a child with White Pony. CERTAINLY agree with how you say it has the same feel as white pony, but sounds like a mesh of the last two records. I got this the thursday prior to the release, bought a physical copy tuesday and since having it in both forms I havent listened to anything else. Its up there, possibly my favorite deftones album. The album flows flawlessly, this band is mind blowing! And whats with all the hate on the production?
This album feels like one that would be better when performed live. The CD makes you feel like you're missing out on something, I dunno, I can't get into the CD but it sounds like this whole CD would make an awesome set list for one of their concerts.
Old review at this point but after first listen I'm lukewarm. I bought White pony near its release 13 years ago and have been a fan ever since but didn't get KNY til now. I'm hearing some interesting new ideas on this album for the Deftones and its definitely the most melodic. As a long time fan, I can't help but lament the utter lack of screaming - that's going to keep this one from competing with their other releases for me. I would say so far, DE is their best modern release with ATF and WP tied for best of all time.
It's a grower. I wasn't crazy about Gauze or Goon Squad until a good solid five or six listens then they clicked. The rest are pure gold. DE is still my second favorite Deftones album, with ATF being the first.
