Patience, Patients - Renovatio

Reviewed by: BrokenMirror (02/14/08)
Patience, Patients - Renovatio
Record Label: Subsumption Records
Release Date: January 1, 2008

Patience, Patients are a band that embodies the true spirit of the punk “scene”; all four guys are massive music fans who write and play because they love to. Their new EP, Renovatio, is a record that defies genres and classification, combining prog song structures, driving riffs, and ardent singing with occasional full-bore post hardcore screams.

This boiling pot of a sound comes rushing through the speakers with opener “Humiliation by Means of Applause,” an anxious explosion of hardcore bellow full of charging guitar riffs. Ostensibly written about the strains of being a scene band trying to make artistic music and fair-weather closed minded fans, the track’s angst-ridden lyrics match the speedy tempo and ferocious guitars very well: "Humiliation by means of applause / So give the scene another hand / Because this one is for all of you." “Headlight Locomotive Sunrise” is a more sluggish mid-tempo track which simmers rather than explodes. Despite the proficient guitar strumming, the track does not encapsulate the band’s spirit and energy quite as well as the other more up-tempo and furious numbers. “Miss Hollywood” on the other hand progresses rapidly and burns like a dying star with shining guitar work and driving percussion. Patience, Patients are not a band that believes in subtlety as demonstrated by “Miss Hollywood’s” direct almost crude lyrics, with such glowing examples as, “Women / Can’t live with them / Or without them / And you sure and hell can’t kill them.”

Renovatio is a record that certainly makes an impact, either through the creative if unusual structures and rhythms or just through the sheer energy and intensity the record possesses. Granted Kirk Depierre is far from the world’s best vocalist, and his voice can get a little grating at times, plus there are many more naturally talented bands, but together Patience, Patients are an exhilarating and enjoyable band whose imagination, heart, and love of the art is evident in every note they play and every word they write. The “scene” would be a better place if there were more bands with the desire that Patience, Patients possess, and Renovatio does enough to suggest that this is a band to look out for.

:) I used to date the bassist, so I've made it a point to listen to them.
These guys are the real deal.
