Ryan Gardner Album Cover

Ryan Gardner

This year flew by. The first half was spent finishing up things to prep for college; the second half was spent getting ready to head off and then leaving. It was a year of more changes than any point in my life thus far. Due to all of this change and new beginnings in unfamiliar places, music has really meant more to me than ever before. I’ve clung to my headphones more so than ever before this past year, and the impact of these records has been remarkable. Music wise, this year has been one of the strongest in recent memory – bands and labels have really been giving it their all in “our scene,” with many successfully going the DIY route. It’s been a fantastic year overall on my end – one where I’m realizing exactly where I want to be in my life, who I want to be, and how I’m going to get there. Anyway, this is my best attempt at organizing and ordering my favorite albums…which is always a super fun, yet super difficult. I guess you could say it’s a list of favorites, but it’s also a list of what albums have meant the most to me this year. Check it out and please let me know your thoughts. And here we go.

You Blew It!Grow Up, Dude

Band Of The Yearfun.: There was really no question here. The three guys in fun. took over the world this year. Some Nights is one of the best pop albums in recent memory, and the guys deserve all the success in the world.

Runner-Up: The Gaslight Anthem

Best New BandsThe Tower and the Fool, Pentimento, Major League, Last Call, The American Scene, Code Orange Kids, Frank Ocean, Misser, Troubled Coast, Xerxes, You Blew It!, State Champs, I Call Fives

Hoping for huge things from these bands next year. They killed it this year.

Song Of The YearThis is cliché but I have to go with fun. – “We Are Young.” The song is huge, and graduating high school this year, it means a lot to me.

Runner-Up: The Gaslight Anthem – “45”

Best B-Side/Bonus TrackThe Gaslight Anthem – “Blue Dahlia” – Handwritten

For a track that didn’t make the album, “Blue Dahlia” is massive. Lyrically, it’s killer, per usual, and the song just screams summer rock ‘n roll. This will probably be one of my favorite b-sides ever.

Runner-Up: Go Radio – “Live, Learn, Let Go” – Close The Distance

Best Record LabelsNo Sleep, Pure Noise, Run For Cover, Hopeless, Rise, and Epitaph Records had fantastic years. Many fantastic releases, bands, and new signees.

Best ConcertTaking Back Sunday’s Tell All Your Friends Tour (TAYF10)

Best concert I’ve ever been to. I’ll never forget this show.

Best MoviesI missed out on catching a lot of new movies – Looper, Lincoln, and The Master come to mind off the top of my head – in theaters this year due to being down at college for the second half of the year. However, of the ones I saw, The Dark Knight Rises (Christopher Nolan), Skyfall (Sam Mendes), Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino), Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson), and Argo (Ben Affleck) were my favorites.

Album Reviews

Fell behind on watching movies and reading three-fourths through the year due to starting college and being more limited on time, but I did the best I could to continue to explore movies and to read.

That's it.

I had an incredibly hard time with my top 3 - basically, MDAM, Gaslight, and Menzingers switched places on and off all year.

I too am very much anticipating the new Lydia album. I love everything they have done but I have a (hopeful) feeling that it will blow Paint It Golden out of the water.
