I don't think he'll ever top The Animal Years, for me, just because there's so much emotional investment there, but I could definitely see this one taking the number two slot.

Yeah, I could agree with that. The Animal Years is undeniably terrific, and will probably always contain his best songs. This one is hitting me in all the right ways, though.

Does anyone have the b-sides? I've only heard "I Got My Own Way" so far.

Yeah, I'm liking it more with each listen. "Hopeful" is just tremendous.

Mine, too. And "New Lover."

Am I the only one getting a slight Smog/Bill Callahan vibe from this? I mean, Josh isn't as monotone as Bill is, obviously, but that kept popping in my head on the first listen for some reason.

And I'm loving this new Paul Simon-esque lilt he's started to incorporate since "Lark." Every time one of the bouncier numbers comes on, like "Bonfire" or "New Lover," that's who I'm thinking of.

I never noticed the shared lyrics in A New Lover and A Certain Light, really really like that

This has held up really well. I had an inkling that it was his second best record when it was released--now I'm sure of it.

I'm on board with this. Still one of my favorites of the year.

Between Dawes and Jimmy Eat World for me at the moment. Frank Turner is at 3, and Josh Ritter and Night Beds round out the top five. You?

Nick Cave's Push the Sky Away is my #1, I think. But I'm pretty confident that Patty Griffin's American Kid is either going to eclipse it or take the #2 spot--I had one of those visceral, overwhelmingly positive first impressions that I've found to be pretty scarce with new albums, and it's gotten better with each listen. Ritter's Beast, Grouper's The Man Who Died in His Boat, and Low's The Invisible Way round out my current top five.
