Quote:
General opinion seems to agree that James Franco was far and away the weakest link to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, something Fox and director Matt Reeves seem to agree with as Franco has not been contacted by either party to reprise his role for the film's upcoming sequel DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

As per a recent interview that MTV conducted with Franco: "I was going to be a small part of the next one. There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left."

There are many questions left to be answered regarding DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, one of them certainly being just how extensive the human involvement will be. Andy Serkis and his fellow motion capture artists were most certainly the stars of the first film, and with the story having left off where it did it will be fascinating to see what direction Fox chooses to go with the next step of human-ape interaction. But how do you feel about Franco being gone, if that is indeed the case? Were you a fan of the work he did, was it fine but you'd prefer fresh faces for the sequel, or was his work/presence irrelevent because it's all about the apes to you?

Did you like Rise of the Planet of the Apes enough to feel it warrants a sequel?

I don't think Franco is completely necessary to a sequel. I think it would make more sense for him to appear in some capacity (perhaps, even in a photo or something) to tie together the films and bring an emotional side to Caesar, but I wouldn't say his involvement will make or break the film.

Because of Andy Serkis. I had physical emotions for his ape, but not Franco's character.

I mean, I wouldn't call Franco's performance bad. It wasn't life changing, but it was average. Saying that a CGI ape made you emote more than an actor did may mean you need to reevaluate what you consider good acting to be.

A character being mostly CGI does not exclude it from being considered good acting. Serkis has garnered plenty of talk in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work as Gollum and Caesar. He's performing in every scene just as much as any actor while doing the motion capture work.

Nah. You just said yourself that Franco was average. I agree with that. Serkis was above average in his motion capture performance. It's that simple and it doesn't mean that I need to reevaluate what I think good acting is. Franco has killed it in other roles (see: 127 Hours, Milk). But he has also phoned in plenty of his roles, and this was one of them.

I think Franco's appearance (even if it's just a reference) is necessary to at least some degree, considering he played such an important role in Caesar's life in the first movie, and I wanna see where he ends up. That being said, I wouldn't be too concerned if he didn't make an appearance. Sequel needs more Malfoy though...

I don't think Franco was weak in Apes at all. I agree that you don't need his character moving forward, but how was he weak?

He wasn't weak at all, just not very good either. He was fine. Whether he's a part of the sequel or not though, I'm crazy excited. I loved the first one.
