I'd love to write a series of 10-15 page scripts set in the world of one TV show featuring a character from a different show. To take examples of two shows I've been watching recently, Seth Cohen in Game of Thrones.

This might be incredibly stupid (in fact, I'm almost positive it is), but it could be at least fun, and sometimes when I'm writing, that's my main goal.

i've been working on a cartoon for years that's very similar to that. it's called In The Land Of Foreverland and centers on a dude that's very Seth Cohen-y going into a WoW type game to rescue his friend who has gotten lost in the game.

i've had the pilot written forever, and the first season outlined, i just keep focusing on different projects before getting the ball rolling on this one.

That's actually a pretty decent premise for a show xD Would watch.

Had an idea for a script and I don't even know what that means. Like how the fuck does that process even start?

The easiest way to start is by reading other scripts of movies you've seen and studying how the formatting works. If and when you're ready to write, you can use Final Draft ($$$) or Celtx (free).

Hahahaha, I went a very long time without paying for it, but then I realized, 'oh, i kind of want to make a career out of this,' and realized I probably shouldn't pirate the software most crucial to that realization.

Had to pay for Final Draft because my pirated version had a bug where every new document I opened was actually the Breaking Bad sample script, which proved do be very irritating in terms of reformatting.

easiest way to start, at least for me, is outline it.

establish your characters, establish what happens over the course of the story, and put it down into coherent thoughts.

What I usually do:

- Who is your lead?
- Where do you want to see this character at the end of your story?

Too often do I read screenplays that lack character development or lack a clear lead.

It's to the best of my ability to undermine the conventions of mainstream filmmaking so I will continue to pirate just as it will make me happy when someone will pirate my work someday. Working on a short film this summer that I will leak to this thread once it's done. Screenwriting has always just made me happy, it's my own form of catharsis. It's unfortunate that we are stymied by the industry.

Thanks guys. I already have rough outlines for the characters and the general arc of the story. I guess I'll begin fleshing it out the way Cody recommended to me. Appreciate it.

I couldn't find a screenwriting thread so I figured I'd give this a whirl. I'm sure there's more than a few of you out there that love to write, whether it be comedy, drama, or nonsensical internet wonderment. I thought this would be a cool place to bounce ideas off each other, discuss what we're writing.

Great idea for a thread. I would like to write for TV. I am currently working with a friend on a TV pilot script. We have an outline for 5 seasons. I also have 5 ideas for other shows that I would like to develop.

For anyone who wants to get started screenwriting but doesn't know how: http://mypdfscripts.tumblr.com/

Read. Just read. Horror, sci-fi, action, drama, films you love and films you hate. Read as many scripts as you can, and once you get a sense for what you like, get a copy of Celtex or Final Draft. Both programs will help you with most of your page formatting, but just in case, I'd bookmark this page, too.

The most important thing to remember is that STRUCTURE IS KING in screenwriting. The metaphor's a cliche, but it's absolutely true: a screenplay is a blueprint. It doesn't mean the finished product can't be a hut or a skyscraper or the Pentagon, but there are only so many ways to warp your materials before your building won't even stand up. This is a pretty good guide to the basics.

I'd outline your story before you start writing. That'll help you see where you're going before you get lost writing scenes. The only thing that goes in your action lines should be whatever an audience will see on screen. "Lionel quivers," is fine, "Lionel is afraid" is not. Show don't tell. Characters can be contradictory. People don't always say what they mean, and don't often talk about how they're feeling. Keep your descriptions as crisp and clear possible (again with the blueprints: they show every detail but aren't very colorful.) Flowery language dies on the page.

Write, write, write, and don't stop when it isn't fun anymore. The best work hurts.

Thanks for the info. I have been reading scripts and started on a few projects.

Started writing a script about the early 2000s pop punk/skate scene. Probably zero audience for it, but it's getting me all nostalgic.
